Sleeping Giants

Rene Denfeld has done it again. She has taken the broken lives of the boys at Birchwood and an orphaned polar bear named Molly and given us hope for the future. This is not an easy read. A controversial treatment called 'holding time' has been utilized at Birchwood with disastrous results. Some boys ran awa--or did they? A young woman named Stephanie takes a break from the zoo where she cares for Molly the polar bear and comes to Eagle Cove, Oregon, to find out what happened to her brother Dennis. A resident and retired cop named Larry offers to help her. Together they will unearth some secrets that some of the former Birchwood workers would like to keep buried. The juxtaposition of Molly's story with the Birchwood boys is layered with sleeping giant carvings from the desert floor of Arizona. A mesmerizing new title that I will not soon forget.
