3.5 STARS

This book has left me conflicted. I read Brooklyn in 2015 and I loved it- it was one of my top ten that year. In that book, I could feel Eilis unsureness- her ultimate decision made, she moved back to New York.

Again in this book, Eilis has to make tough decisions. We know from the blurb that Eilis finds out in Chapter 1 that Tony has been unfaithful and the other woman is pregnant. The other woman’s husband has told Eilis that he will be dropping that baby off on her doorstep. What a stunning revelation! Eilis decides she needs to get away, so decides to go back to Ireland, after a 20 year absence. This go round, we follow Nancy Sheridan, Eilis past best friend and Jim Farrell, her former Irish love.

There are so many secrets in this book and so many “Don’t tell warnings. I was left with so many questions by the end of the book. Eilis, as a character, was not as well fleshed out this time. She seemed very flat to me. I couldn’t decide if she had or had not been happy over the past 20 years. She is supposedly a strong person, but she never seemed able to stand up for herself. She objected to the baby, but yet she never asked Tony why this affair had happened. What went on in Enniscorthy, Ireland became like a three ring circus, with Jim ensconced in the middle. I wasn’t sure how Toibin would bring it to a conclusion, but conclude it he did. Hopefully, this is not the end of Eilis story, because if it is, what a disappointment!

Diane Barnes I'm not surprised at your opinion.

Antoinette You know me well, Diane!

Seawitch Well, lol, Antoinette does not sound like an Irish name the secrets, the shame, the lack of discussion (especially about sex), the acceptance of affairs it all felt so accurate to me. My ancestors came from Ireland and Scotland to Brooklyn and Toibin expresses the way it was so very well.

My affluent Irish MIL married an Italian farmer who never went to college

I finished the book thinking he better not keep us waiting so long for the next installment. I couldn’t put it down!

Cynthia Dunn I gave it only two stars. Very disappointed.

Antoinette I am definitely not Irish, Seawitch. Italian heritage in fact. So, I could definitely picture Tony’s family. There are actually many similarities between the two cultures. All the things you mention in fact. I hope there is a third book. Otherwise, the ending was just left open.

Antoinette It just didn’t come close to Brooklyn, Cynthia.

Laysee I can feel your disappointment, Antoinette. A bit sad considering how much you loved ‘Brooklyn. It is helpful for me to know why this book did not quite meet expectations. Great review.

Megan Gibbs Oh dear !!! Like you, I was planning on rereading Brooklyn this year before reading this sequel, but it kind of feels like all the author unwraps his whole plot and changes a story that didn’t really need a sequel. Thanks for review as I’m not sure I want to read it now- and prefer the happy ever after version in my head ☺️

Antoinette Thanks so much, Laysee. I was so excited to read this one. I guess I just expected too much.

Antoinette You said it perfectly Megan- Brooklyn really didn’t need a sequel. I loved the way that one ended. Thanks for your wonderful comment.

message 11: by Candi (new)

Candi I'm excited to read Brooklyn. However, if I love it I will keep in mind that sequels don't always have the same magic. I sympathize with your frustrations, Antoinette!

Antoinette I know you will love Brooklyn, Candi! Many reviewers gave this one 5 Stars, so keep that in mind. My expectations were maybe too high. Thanks for your comment, Candi.

message 13: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Yep, I stand firm that I will not read this one. I loved Brooklyn too much to dim that experience.

Antoinette I stand by your decision, Lisa! I wish I’d left well enough alone. But remember, there are many who disagree with me.

message 15: by Bianca (new)

Bianca I'll keep my expectations low when I get to it. I haven't read Toibin yet.

Antoinette The first book, Brooklyn, was a 5 star for me, Bianca, so start there.
