Ah the leak is real, Adina. To be fair, (for some reason or other) I don’t care enough about (literary) prizes/alike (it’s sort of like how I love so much that Higgs refers to him winning the Nobel Prize as the worst thing that ever happened to him, what an immensely endearing man, rest in peace), but definitely love for a writer I like to get that 50k (in this one, I think I’ll be rooting for Everett). And as for literary ‘world, canon or darlings, I care even less, I think. Much prefer ‘cockroaches (his words not mine, but very Lispector coded, I adore) like Benjamin Labatut.
But if I must say, oh dear (unfiltered rant ahead), the book was not only style over substance but it even lacks a satisfying plot (if there was a solid one at all) which is rarely a thing I mind/complain about. From very early on, it was already too clear to me that the writer has no proper ideas/experiences in relation to ‘boxing. Fault is mine because I carried on. Might suit readers who know nothing about boxing/MMA. Underwhelming experience, and that is an understatement altogether. Nothing wrong with writing about something one is unfamiliar with, but this one is just too far from being a work well-done (to me). I can’t say I am a fan of novels that involve a lot of ‘navel-gazing, but having read this one, I found myself almost begging for the writer to (excuse me but) at least yester-bate some because whatever (excuse me again) fuckery this is, it’s doing (excuse me, one last time) fuck all for me. Don’t get me wrong, the writing is definitely extremely self-indulgent and masturbatory, but just so directly gross with no beauty or meaning in between the lines. Such a shame to see women’s sports written with so little care and respect. One step forward two steps back, or however the saying goes. (drop it back into the compost bin) But if you do pick it up anyway, Adina, I hope your experience is miraculously better than mine :) .

Ah the leak is real, Adina. To be..." you got me on your side at Labatut :)). I enjoyed your strong feelings about this book. I do not think I will touch it based on what you said. I do not know anything about boxing so I might not see if there is anything wrong with her knowledge. However, nothing appeals to me.
I also agree with what you wrote about prizes. I gave up trying to read the whole list last year so I just pick what interests me. James is on the top but I guess I have to read Finn first. It is the only reason it is not already read.

Ah the leak is real..."
To be fair (while this may just be my loose assumption) don't think this is the sort of writing you gravitate towards, Adina : ) so you won't be missing much.
I think that's the best way to go about it : ) , but I suppose I'm very biased because that's exactly how I do it too haha. It's so difficult to read anything that doesn't feel intriguing enough. Quite impressed with readers who can commit to reading the list(s). Also I'm on the same page with you with regards to 'James' : ) ! Feels a bit cheeky to go ahead and read it before reading Twain's Finn first. Literally why I keep postponing the read, but I think I might do it this way regardless at some point...
