Reread July 2023
I randomly decided to reread this ten years after I originally read it and shockingly, it still holds up!
Teenage Clara is part angel blood, meaning she gets visions of her purpose she needs to fulfill. When she receives visions of a teenage boy in front of a forest fire, her mother moves their entire family from California to Wyoming. There Clara meets Christian, the boy in her vision, but now Clara needs to figure out where and when this fire is going to happen. Meanwhile, Clara has become frenemies with her best friends brother, Tucker, who seems to get under her skin.
I just have to say, I am so glad this book held up for me ten years later. I'm fairly certain the physical copies are out of print (?) which makes me sad but obviously it has fallen out of popularity over the years. I love diving into this story, Cynthia Hand wrote a story that's compulsively readable and I love all the characters in it. We have Clara with her one track brain, Wendy her gold retriever bestie, Angela her goth friend and Tucker the pain in Clara's side.
Hand did a great job of pacing the book and keeping the readers attention by slowly giving hints towards Clara's purpose. That mixed in with some normal high school angst, it all blended together to make a really good story. I thought the angel mythology in this was developed well for a YA novel and while it touches on angels, it never gets overly religious which I appreciated.
Also, having read this so long ago I don't quite remember what happens so I will be reading the other two books as if it's the first time again and I am beyond excited.
