Dan Brown is back with another thriller so moronic you can feel your IQ points flaking away like dandruff.

“Origin marks the fifth outing for Harvard professor Robert Langdon, the symbologist who uncovered stunning secrets and shocking conspiracies in “The Da Vinci Code and Brown’s other phenomenally best-selling novels. All the worn-out elements of those earlier books are dragged out once again for Brown to hyperventilate over like some grifter trying to fence fake antiques.

This time around, the requisite earth-shattering secret is a discovery made by Edmond Kirsch, a computer genius with a flair for dramatic presentations and infinite delays. Kirsch has called the world’s intelligentsia to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, where he plans to reveal his findings to the world because. . . .

Diane Wallace honest..

message 8: by Salieri (new)

Salieri @Mit: He HAS read it. He wrote the article for the Washington Post. You would have seen his name on it if you had bothered to look before bashing him for not praising Brown.

message 9: by Shauki (new)

Shauki Al-Gareeb "Dan Brown is back with ANOTHER thriller so moronic..."

Just one question: why bother reading his books if you don't like them? One book, okay (to see if it's better than the first one). But why again and again?

This is the first Dan Brown novel I have reviewed for The Washington Post. I reviewed it because I thought our readers might like to know if it was worth their time.

Boostamonte Halvorsen Personally, your review for the Washington Post is shit...well written, but shit. Why? Because you start out by showing the reader that you already don't like Dan Brown or his books. You didn't stay impartial, and you didn't just review this book. You basically said: "I hate Dan Brown books and this is why you should to." -- to me, that makes your review useless. Sorry. Not sorry.

Jackie This review was more entertaining than the book! I really liked DaVinci Code and even the others in the series pretty well. But this one was just not as enjoyable. The formula has become tired, best to put it to sleep.

Paula Excellent review, as always Ron. We don't always see eye to eye (although we do here), but I always gain insights from your Reviews. Thanks!

Mike Lapin What a moronic review

message 15: by Varun (new)

Varun this is an awesome book, not on the level of davinci code, but really enjoyed it.. the main thing is that it's an Intelligently written book.. considering the subject it's obvious that many people will hate it because they don't like the implications in the book.. not everyone can see this book in an impartial way.. so enjoy it if you like it

message 16: by Salieri (new)

Salieri What I love about "controversial" books is that you can't say it's absolute garbage without people coming to tell you it was just too clever for you and you just hated because it contradicts your opinions on a sensitive topic. Like controversial books CAN'T be terrible, for some unknow reason, if you didn't like it, it's your fault for being stupid and/or biased and not the author's for writing a bad book.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against people who still love Brown's books (I have given up myself), I just wish they'd stop insulting those who disagree with them. Go enjoy your book instead and stop hating on one-star reviews, that would make everyone's life more enjoyable.

It's okay. I'm just happy people are reading and talking about books.

Իé Astudillo Its actually funny that you give so many fucks about something you categorize as "moronic". Haha.

It's okay if people disagree, it doesn't change the fact that the book sucked. And the biggest lie in the book was the utopia he predicted when everyone knows we're heading towards a dystopia. But like your review said, Dan Brown is more worried about getting a movie deal and I don't even like the movies.

message 25: by Guniz (new)

Guniz I loved the review! Having read Dan Brown's previous books, I could fully relate to it. I may still read the book, but I know exactly what to expect. People - even if you don't like the review, you could at least stay respectful and keep a sense of humour! Meanwhile Ron - keep going!

Thank you, Guniz!

Venkat Raman I must accept that it is a crackjacker of thrillers. Dan Brown portentously moralized the system of religious beliefs about life’s alpha & omega in this book. We might not able to see our Prof Robert Langdon unearthing some earth shaking secrets using symbols. But Dan Brown, as usual, has the knack to give bone-chilling experiences at every point. I felt the real hero was the futurist Edmond Kirsch altogether. Also I felt the plot got weakened in the end which is unusual having known Mr Brown’s phenomenal grip in revealing the suspense and moving further with the same intensity in the story. Yet it is a worth reading for his impeccable writing which is a blend of fiction and worldly facts.

message 28: by Rosie (new)

Rosie Periwinkle Right! Great review! Also this part,

“Robert, Ambra whispered, “just remember the wise words of Disney’s Princess Elsa.
Langdon turned. “I’m sorry?
Ambra smiled softly. “Let it go.
*End of chapter 35*

That part I find so nonsense.

Elizabeth A Hilarious!

John Robson Dan Brown is an accomplished writer who has sold more books than you have written words. You think you are better than the average reader. You are not! You're just a envious cynic. His novels are entertaining and there is always something to be learned from his writing. Reading is reading. Get over yourself!

Ankur Hahaa 🤣😂🤣🤣

message 32: by Mon (new) - rated it 1 star

Mon Just finish reading the book which took me more than a month because of the same boring plot with the same character, the same random woman and a small twist on the assassin!
I am with you Ron
👇🏻

Raluca Victoria I do agree that it's like reading the same thing over and over again, but I found them all entertaining regardless. Your review was fun to read, even though we're not on the same page.

Salman Shami You are completely right. How any editor could let this go through.

Elena While i also think that the book sucked and find your review hilarious - i do not understand how it is appropriate to call something "moronic" in a review for the Post ? I also thought that a review (especially for a newspaper) should start off "impartially" and then show us why you liked/disliked the book. You, on the other hand, started off your review by saying "i hate Dan Brown, i thought his other books were shit, so let me tell you why this one is also shit". This is generally not how you go into writing a review. If you are biased to begin with - why should anyone trust that your opinion would be any different here or that you even gave this book a chance?! As i said, i agreed with your review, i just find the beginning (intro!) extremely unprofessional .
Also, your ŷ review is basically CLICK BAIT for the review on the WaPo website. Uncool.

Elena I agree with you. I actually enjoyed Dan Brown's first book and even the second was entertaining. This one however is awful.

Lorna Ron, my trusted reviewer. I must admit that I was taken aback by your review as I embarked on this adventure that was a wonderful trip into Spain and art and architecture and then . . .

Le Kim He wrote the book to entertain people, not to higher your already-low IQ

Salman Shami Le wrote: "He wrote the book to entertain people, not to higher your already-low IQ"

That's the problem, this book has almost zero entertainment value. The problem is it reads like written by a new author and their editor rather than by a famous author. It's like he has farmed out his writing to underlings. So it lacks character and any semblance of a plot. There's zero suspense and no reason to turn pages. I got the book as a birthday present and felt obligated to read it. I was unable to finish it, it's that bad.

message 40: by A.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

A.D. Sloane Ron, I think that folks are upset because you called it “moronic. The word naturally elicits visceral responses from readers who enjoyed because the unsaid implication is that the reader is even more so. Just sayin...
Be a little nicer perhaps? 😉

message 41: by Zabcia (new)

Zabcia I read this review a few years ago after completing the book myself, as I was searching for validation for the fuming steam coming out of my ears out of hatred for this book. It's the funniest review I've ever read, and whenever I need a good laugh I come back to it. Brilliant work, unlike 'Origin'!
