it was ok

What a disappointment. The Kirkus starred review describes, "a dramatic denouement," with "a plot twist worthy of Edith Wharton." To me it felt like the last page of the book must be missing, or that the author, unsure how the end the book simply decided not to.

Elton Johnson Ikr 😅 agreed!

Gina DiGiovine Goodwin Agree!

message 3: by Jan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jan Agree. Felt like the novel was unfinished and I'd read half a book.

Samantha Markins Same. I recognize life isn’t always about happy endings. However, after investing in two books, you want something somewhere somehow to find a way to get it right. It’s always the women who are forced to subjugate to the men and the women in this book blindly demure them over and over. Except for Ailish. Tony is a heel, ignorant, wimpy and just plain a putz. That Alish gave up so much of her life to be devoted to him stinks a lot like a plumber when he gets home from work.

Evie Leslie So agree! Tony is a wet sponge with no backbone. On the other hand Jim is a wishy washy dill who has never lived life beyond the confines of his pub. If I were Eilis I’d dump both of them, neither are worthy of her love!

Evie Leslie Colm Toibin has set us up for another sequel.lets hope that Eilis runs off with a dark mysterious Spanish lover and spends the next chapter of her life living in sunny Majorca without a care in the world. Away from all those busy bodies in Ireland!!

Nancy Manning I felt exactly the same!

Rusty Agree. I didn't recognize these characters AT ALL. So disappointing.

Diane Maddison I’ve just finished it and am sooo disappointed. I hate a book with an unsatisfactory ending, which this is in spades! I think Toibin wants the reader to surmise what will happen. So Jim will marry Nancy, Eilis will go back to Long Island. She will create a life for herself and be happy. Without either of the two losers hampering her. There you go. Done!

Tammy La Guarina I am disappointed. I was so excited to read this I had high hopes. Granted I didn’t read Brooklyn but saw the movie. I just feel that this book had very little character development. I have so many questions. I thought Tony was a better person- I thought he really loved her. I didn’t believe in the casual sex that Jim had with both women. I just expected more.

Jeanette Immense let down to see these Brooklyn characters become such pap. Your rating is spot on.

Laura Gray That’s exactly how I felt!! Such a disappointing ending. Felt like the author couldn’t decide how to finish it!! I’d been looking forward to reading this as I loved Brooklyn and was a little let down.

Catherine Agree 100 percent! Very disappointed with how it ended with nothing resolved. Seems like a set up for another book.

message 14: by Rosy (new) - rated it 1 star

Rosy Agree. Very disappointed

message 15: by Lori (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lori Agree. It was very disappointing.

message 16: by Colette (new)

Colette So disappointed I actually looked to see if pages were missing from my book .

message 17: by Lola (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lola I agree

Christine Triggs Agree with all of the above. What a snooze. Somebody, anybody make a decision.

message 19: by Mary (new)

Mary Frawley Agree such a disappointment. Tony from Brooklyn would never do that...

message 20: by Sue (new) - rated it 2 stars

Sue Finley Right! I thought Kindle had neglected to download the complete book (and I even thought that when reading Brooklyn, the first in the "series." Not even a "the end?") And no mention of a third book in the series. Too bad I couldn't rate it higher, because the story line, while predictable, was pretty good.

Janet Yup. I hated this book.

message 22: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna I feel like that was the problem with the first book too, an abrupt ending.

message 23: by BG (new) - rated it 4 stars

BG Agreed. Felt like a lot of talking and no one getting anywhere

Marie Louise Farrell Completely agree. I almost gave up reading when I realised what Tony had done. But I continued. It's too boring with an unknown ending. I just hope Eilis didn't go back to Tony and set up a good life for herself

message 25: by Jane (new) - added it

Jane Marie Just finished the last page...I 1000% agree. That's not an ending!

Carol Folino All of the above! 🥲

Patricia Dargenio Evie wrote: "So agree! Tony is a wet sponge with no backbone. On the other hand Jim is a wishy washy dill who has never lived life beyond the confines of his pub. If I were Eilis I’d dump both of them, neither ..."

So true about the “men but Eilis is no bargain either.

Patricia Dargenio I have never read a book with so many of the characters constantly plotting and planning what they are going to say. None of them were appealing and that Jim behaved like a 10 year old. A waste of $15 of my money not to mention my time.

message 29: by Kay (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kay Such a disappointing “non-ending!

Marlene All I can say is “ditto. All the comments I have read echo my feelings. I also thought there was another page or chapter coming. There was no ending! The men in this book have the backbones of a noodle!

Darlena Hendrickson Augh!!

Paddy C Kim. 100% correct. The ending is presumably to set up a third book. I for one will not be reading it . I feel as cheated by the author as the protagonists must feel by each other. I am so pissed off.

Nance Sparks I agree with all of you. I was so disappointed in the ending or lack of ending - My first book but this author, probably my last. I've never read an Oprah pushed book before - first and last!

Loretta If the Columbia campus wasn’t closed to the public, I’d be making an in-person protest for this inconsequential story, with too many versions of nonevents.

Birdie Absolutely agree. Seriously why

JAMES ONEILL I loved this book.till the terrible ending

Carole I agree. A ridiculous end. Now are supposed to wait for Eilis Lacey #3

Lindsay I absolutely loved it!

Maite Comas barnes Agree. After Brooklyn, terrible disappointment

Katherine One of the worst "endings" I've read in quite awhile.

Donna Loved this sequel - I do hope there is another

Laura J Terrible! Started out with such a bang and IMO just went downhill, cornball & confusing...ugh

Laura J also, did not know this was a sequel. I maybe would have understood it better?!

Janet Reed What kind of ending is this?? Did the author just get tired of writing? I was annoyed with the character, Jim, but now I’m even more annoyed with the author!

message 45: by KMac (new) - rated it 3 stars

KMac Macfarlane I’m about 2/3 through the book. It’s annoying to me that Tony’s brother’s names are not the same as in Brooklyn (Lawrence, Maurice, and Frqnk)as they are in Long Island (Enzo, Mauro, and Frank). Also, it bothers me that Jim in Brooklyn, is an only child, and in Long Island he has three siblings. Based on the comments, I am braced for the terrible ending.

message 46: by CAROL (new)

CAROL KAPLAN I thought my Kindle ran out of battery and then I realized the book ended. Very disappointing

Eileen Francis KMac, it bothered me at first but Enzo is a nickname for Lorenzo (aka Laurence). Not sure why the change. Perhaps in the 50s they were trying to be more Americanized and 70 yrs later as the characters are more familiar, Eilis and “we are more familiar?

message 48: by Jan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jan Krehel I got sick of reading every-single-thing every character was thinking! Sheesh!!!

Michelle O'Brien Completely agree. Book clearly written with commercial intent. Many incoherencies and extremely weak ending. Compared to Edith Wharton ? Are you kidding ?!?

message 50: by Angela (new)

Angela I agree, I had to force myself to finish it. It didnt help that the Jim character was so indecisive and willing to be messed around.
