Read 4 times. Last read May 22, 2010.

I've now finished reading this wonderful book for the fourth time and have written and scheduled my blog post about the last chapter Penelope, for publication on June 16th 2010, Bloomsday.
To see my unpacking of each chapter, month by month as I read it, visit and scroll down to the tag: Ulysses (Disordered thoughts of an amateur) or
I'm going to tackle Finnegan's Wake next...

Cynthia I admire you Lisa. I've had this on my shelf for awhile but I'm afraid to attempt it. I don't need another reading failure this year. I started both Les Mis and Don Quixote and couldn't stick with either. Do you ever go through periods where you can't commit to long reads? It seems like the more I write the less I read :(.

Lisa Oh I don't blame you for giving up on Don Q - I kept going with it only out of sheer stubbornness. (As you can see if you trudge through the long blog post I wrote as I waded through it!)
Le Mis is on the TBR. One day, maybe!

Hi Lisa - 4 times! God, you poor thing!
I’m afraid I must add myself to the list of your commentators who have a vague desire to read this but who is too intimidated to do so. In my own case I wouldn't say it's the text itself which daunts me (although it's daunting enough), but rather fear of the obsessive-compulsive beast that would be unleashed should I open the box...but if I do ever (deep intake of breath) take Ulysses on, I'll definitely do so with the help of your (I'm sure far from) disordered thoughts.

Lisa I'm glad you commented here, Troy, because it's re-opened Message 2 - and now I *have* read Les Miserables! ()
Does 4 times over 30 years count as obsessive-compulsive LOL?

Ha! Only if you write a chapter by chapter breakdown!!!

Lisa Ha ha, so this means I am obsessive compulsive about Ulysses but not about Les Miserables, eh?
Hmm, *musing* I wonder how a shrink would attempt to restore me to normality....

You're too fast for me Lisa - I still haven't got to your Les Miserables review yet!

And Lord forbid you should ever be taken off to a shrink to become "normal"!

Ok ok. I think I might have let slip a *wee* reference to neurosis. But I was talking about myself! So what, do we divvy the hardbacks 50/50?

I call dibs on all her Aussie first editions. Bwahahahahahaha And she's NOT neurotic.....just EXTREMELY thorough. Yeah, that's the ticket. Now can I have all your first editions Lisa? Where do you keep a copy of your will?

Lisa You are both very naughty and for penance I'm going to make you join me and take turns at writing chapter summaries as guest bloggers when I read Finnegan's Wake...
