really liked it
bookshelves: non-ya, owned, literary-fiction, from-publisher-author, arc, 4-stars, recommend, reviewed

my favorite genre is women going insane.

and fittingly, i don't know what the hell just happened but i had such a good time.

this book felt like unfettered ballistic nonsense, and yet it explored so much: motherhood, menopause, monogamy, other big nouns that don't necessarily begin with M.

this is a book that has so many parts (the number of sentences in this where you're just like hm. ok. let me take a second to take that one in is unbelievable) and is still more than the sum of them.

even if it's a close call sometimes.

bottom line: doesn't take itself at all seriously and is still serious.

(thanks to the publisher for the copy)

Amanda Sola you gotta stop drawing me in with these compelling synopses of yours

Lisa - OwlBeSatReading I ‘liked this because I’m a 50 year old woman, so the reasons are *obvious* I’d also like to ‘like Amanda’s comment, if I could, because I almost spat out my tea 🤣

Ariane Elizabeth Scholl What other books do you like in this genre? Because: same.

Lisa - OwlBeSatReading Ariane wrote: "What other books do you like in this genre? Because: same."

May I suggest Nightbitch 😌 it’s all kinds of wonderful.

Alyson Krueger I would love to interview you for a New York Times article I am writing on this book! This review made me laugh. Want to email me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Kate Berardino Animal - Lisa Taddeo!!

Patty Ramirez Ok, so I’m starting this immediately!

Tiffany Irene, All the Lovers in the Night, Rouge...for odd/spiraling female main characters.

Allie Keith Cannot wait for this review.

I’m not even half way into it, but one sentence in particular has me already convinced that this deserves nothing less than 5 stars.

Around chapter 13 or 14

‘Even low res you could tell she’d never held her hand in someone’s hot pee.

I mean, the sheer audacity to write that sentence obviously this one is worth 5 well-earned stars.

julia ♡ i think that genre needs to be a section on goodreads 😌

Jennifer Austin Lmao same. Add to tbr

message 13: by Jenn (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jenn C. You’d love Ferrante’s Days of Abandonment. I wouldn’t characterize All Fours as a woman going insane. Just reaching a point in her life of reckoning with what midlife means.

Narelin This comment is why I decided to give this book a try and thank you

Kristen Goran Read. “The Coin if you haven’t already!

Callie Brown The first line of your review inspired me to read this and I loved it.

message 29: by Jen (new) - added it

Jen Steed Knapp Wild, by Cheryl Strayed??

Shannon Trew davies I listened to this one and it was narrated by the author. It was so bizarrely and incredibly entertaining that I quickly binge-listened to all her other books.

message 31: by Leah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Leah A-M The Wedding People and Where’d You Go, Bernadette? are two other examples of ladies going mad and running off somewhere

Autumn Kovach "i don't know what the hell just happened but i had such a good time." - excellent summary!

Serena Completely agree. As a 48 year old woman I was alternating between feeling shell shocked and uncomfortable one moment and in the next paragraph feeling more deeply understood and seen than ever. Her narration was breathtaking, literally. Oh my god, the bathroom tiles. Just astounding.

Nadine in NY Jones Tiffany wrote: "Irene, All the Lovers in the Night, Rouge...for odd/spiraling female main characters."

who is the author for "Irene"? I can't seem to find the right book with that title. I found a French novel that is about violent murders of women by a man, that can't be right.

Jojo This is such a good review. I loved this book even though the sex scenes were bizarre and nothing much happens. Maybe deep down we all just want to go and live in a hotel for 3 weeks.

Hannah Peters “I don’t know what the hell just happened but I had such a good time Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Victoria Spain Serena wrote: "Completely agree. As a 48 year old woman I was alternating between feeling shell shocked and uncomfortable one moment and in the next paragraph feeling more deeply understood and seen than ever. He..."

I agree 100%

The tiles - if they had just the right amount it would open a portal - omg yessss

Anita Nother Book @ariane - Big Swiss is another book about a middle aged woman having a midlife crisis.

I also liked The Echo Wife and No One is Talking About This but they’re different. Yet still kind of similar in parts.

Lilly “I don’t know what the hell just happened but I had a good time is such a good description for this book. But also my life??
