It doesn't matter whether you like fantasy, science-fiction, or just a good story. This story holds you and keeps thing interesting until the very end. You say you don't do comics? That's fine. Ignore the pictures and just read the story. If you come away from this without feeling some level of empathy for characters, there's probably no help for you. For me, the most meaningful quote from this would be:
"Life was easier when I was ignorant. The more I learn, the more I discover how little I truly know and how dangerous that little knowledge can be.��
The entire series was like that.
