it was amazing
bookshelves: favorites

Poignant novel that tackles the family bonds, love, and the urge to find one's place in life. All these presented in the past and the present, with the background of Penobscot Reservation, Maine. Charles Lamosway looks back and discusses the choices he made. Relatively short novel, about an ordinary man, it might seem, but Charles's longing for his daughter, the care he took of his mother, and love he had for his stepfather, made his a character I warmed up to and felt for. Captivating and one of the best books I have read this year.
A big thank-you to Morgan Talty, RB Media, and NetGalley for a free audiobook in exchange for my honest review.*

Thank you, Marilyn :)) I often look for books on The First Nations, especially on the problems they experience and the impact of the heritage on their lives. This seems to be a simple story at first, but it is everything but simple ...

Thank you, Eileen :)) I recommend the interview on PouredOver with the Author, watched it this morning, it's rather interesting :) I'll definitely read his other novel because Mr Talty's writing is gripping, in my opinion .. Hope you find this novel good :)

Q Hi Beata, thank-you for your review - you reminded me I wanted to read this. And because it was one of your favorites so far this year Ineven more so want me to make it. When my dearest friends, old friends, her family lived in the south of the reservation the whole area there is Penopscot Bay and called the Pip Scott over the years. Lots of people who moved up there get away from the city and houses, but her mom grew up there. I wish she was around to ask about this book and how it was when she was growing up anyway

Thank you, Q :)) Lovely of you to mention your dear friend, who, I'm certain, would appreciate the plot as well as the nuances of blood quantum, which the Author explains as regards to the inhabitants of the Reservation. I checked the pictures, it's such a lovely area! Hugs! :))
