Everyone always says that the books are really different from the TV show, so I thought it would be interesting to check this out. However, although I can see that a lot of the relationships, for example, will turn out very unlike the TV show, this first book was extremely similar plot-wise to the first few episodes, so it was all a little predictable and repetitive for me.
That said, I think things will become completely separate later on in this series, so I might just keep at it to get to that point. Because I have to say I do find these books very entertaining. They’re a little trashy, but in a fun and addictive way.

Personally, my favourite chapters were definitely those by Spencer first, then Aria, then Emily, and then Hanna.
-Spencer is a character that is very realistic in how much pressure and loneliness she feels. She works so hard, but her parents will never truly acknowledge or love her, always favoring her sister over her, and that understandably breaks her heart. It’s why I kind of understood why she felt it was okay to steal her sister’s boyfriends the way she did Even though, of course, it shouldn’t be. Besides, her and Wren were honestly kind of cute, even though I actually want her with Andrew. I know he doesn’t have many scenes and he hardly even exists in the TV show, but still. He just seems so utterly adorable and his unrequited crush on Spencer is truly precious. I hope she will start to notice him in the next books, because I know he would be the sweetest boyfriend to her.
-Aria’s gentle and quirky yet confident personality was genuinely nice to read, and I personally like her best out of the four girls. I really want to find out what happens to her next: I hope she’ll eventually dump creepy Ezra for good (who was honestly much worse here than in the TV show) and she’ll find a good guy in the end. Maybe Noel has potential? Even though he seemed to be quite dumb so far.
-Emily is a sweetheart, but she’s a little too passive and therefore kind of boring. I want to care about her, but so far I don’t really. Her swimming is not something I care about, and her relationship with Maya hasn’t really sparked an interest in me yet either.
-With Hanna, I do feel pity and sympathy for her struggles and self-loathing, but I genuinely do not like the person she is right now. That said, Sean deserves to get kicked in the groin for what he said to her and he needs to be knocked off his high-horse so badly. I want to see that happen in the future!

Lastly, I just want to quickly mention that all of these parents are the literal worst. Emily’s parents are racist bigots, Aria’s father is a cheating groomer, Hanna’s mother is a distant workaholic, and Spencer’s parents are cold, unloving and abusive. They all made my blood boil.

Իˡ (Semi-Hiatus) Happy reading gorgeous!💓

Imme van Gorp @Lindsey Thank you, lovely😘

message 3: by Snjez (new)

Snjez Great review, Imme! Glad you enjoyed it. 💗 It will be interesting to see how the next books differ from the tv show. 😊

Imme van Gorp @Snjez Yea, I really hope they’ll start to make more changes then cus if it’ll stay the sane for very long I can imagine it’ll become a bit boring😅 Anyway, thankss🩶

message 5: by aleksandra (new)

aleksandra happy you still enjoyed it Imme!! sometimes all we need is a trashy book which keeps us entertained!! 🤍

Imme van Gorp @aleksandra hhaha amen to that😉🙌🏻

Drache.... (Angelika) Love your review, Imme. I didn't watch the series, and haven't read this book, but it's intriguing how you compare the MCs. I hope the next installments keep you entertained. ❤️
Ps awful parents are the worst to read about, I can never get over them (in my world view parents should be the one constant good thing a person can depend on..).

message 8: by Dann (new)

Dann I read the first book as a teen and remember nothing except the ending. But I’m pretty sure Spencer was my fave; I always related to her the most. And apart from the fact that Wren was her sister’s bf, I really did love the two of them and their cute banter.

Imme van Gorp @Angelika Aww thanks!!🫶🏻 And yes, my world view regarding parents is the exact same, so that’s why it pains me so much about parents who are the complete opposite of that🙁 Really pisses me off so badly!

message 10: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Dann Spencer and Aria were both my favourites in this book and in the TV show as well tbh. I do like Spencer with Wren, but, like I said, for some reason, I really love Andrew so I want her with him more🫣🤣

message 11: by lila (new)

lila ⋆ trashy yet fun books are sometimes wildly entertaining so i'm glad you liked it even if you knew how the plot was gonna go! awesome review, imme! 💙

message 12: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @lila so true! there’s something oddly relaxing about knowing a book is gonna be trashy and you can just enjoy the fun mindlessly hahhah

Charles Trashy yet fun, I love that description! Be very careful with this series, I started them and the next thing I knew I had read the first four..and then the next four…I know…(and Yes, they move away from the tv show into a different area).
Loved your review 🩷

message 14: by Krysta (new)

Krysta ꕤ i never finished the tv show but that’s interesting that the character relationships seem to be different in the book 👀 im glad you enjoyed it though, sometimes the trashy books are just what we need in between everything else lol

message 15: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Charles hahahah I can definitely see how that would happen; they have such an addictive vibe to them, you can just binge them immediately LOL. I’ll try to keep myself in check😉 It’s definitely good to hear too that the books will eventually move away from the TV show; do you remember around which book the plot will truly diverge? I bet that’s too specific to remember, but I suppose asking can’t hurt😂💕

message 16: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Krysta Yea, I wouldn’t be surprised if none of the main couples will end up the same, which is surprising, but fun for me since it won’t be so repetitive LOL

♥︎ Heather ⚔(Semi-Hiatus) I've thought about giving these a go for a while - glad you enjoyed it. I'm pretty curious too! Hope you enjoy the rest of them 💘

message 18: by Krystal (new) - added it

Krystal Fantastic comprehensive review! Bad parents in novels make me want to throw the book at the wall, but then I can’t stop turning the pages to see how things will shake out.

message 19: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Heather Yea, I think they’re worth giving a try! They’re such easy, quick reads so if you don’t really end up liking them, there’s not much harm done haha ;)

message 20: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Krystal They genuinely make me rage! There’s seriously not much in books that pisses me off more than abusive, or even just bad, parents☹️

°❀⋆.lisa °❀⋆. (catching up) I’ve seen the entire tv show, but so curious to see how the character relationships are different in the book, didn’t know this was a book series either 🫣great review, sometimes trashy books are what we need to keep us entertained between reads 💗

message 22: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @lisa if you don’t mind the repetition of the plot, then this is definitely fun to read if you love the tv show <3

message 23: by Cara (new)

Cara Great review, beautiful💞!!!!!!!! I'm so glad this was an enjoyable read for you😘😘!!!!!!!!

Ava ✿ (little hiatus) ahh lovely review, bby! yay the four stars <333 so glad u enjoyed this!

Charles Imme, honestly I don't remember, I binge read them 6 years ago. I had not seen the whole tv series, maybe 1 season before I started the books. When I finally saw the tv series many of the plot elements from season 2 on were different, though some remained familar.

message 26: by Astra (new)

Astra Love all your descriptions of the mcs! Glad you liked this one :DD nice review 🫶

message 27: by Rain (new)

Rain Nothing wrong with some trashy book entertainment!

message 28: by allison (new)

allison ☆ Pretty Little Liars was my show growing up. I loved the main characters so much. Aria was my favorite but I also loved Spencer! Pretty review🩷.

message 29: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina I forgot the adaption was based on a book series! I loved the show until it started to drag but the way your describe each character is pretty on point lol glad you sorta enjoyed it and hope you enjoy the next ones to come! great review 🩷

Imme van Gorp @Cara Thankss, gorgeous🥰

message 31: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Ava Thankyouu! It might not have been the best thing ever, but it was fun ;)

message 32: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Charles hhahaha I completely understand😉 and that was honestly already very helpful information, thanks❤️

message 33: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Astra Ah thankss, im glad to hear it😊

message 34: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Rain Absolutely😉😉

message 35: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @allison Yess, me too!! That show was so addictive back in the day, and Aria and Spencer were definitely the best characters😌

message 36: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Sabrina Yea, I never finished the tv show, as it started to loose my interest after they did the five year jump🫠

message 37: by Dusk (new)

Dusk "a little trashy, but in a fun and addictive way" Can't agree more! I can't think of a better description than yours. Great review, Imme.

message 38: by Meags (last edited Jul 14, 2024 05:52PM) (new)

Meags Fab review, Imme. I’ve never read the series but I did watch the show. Or hate-watched the show, to be more accurate. Spencer was ALWAYS my favourite, so I’m glad to hear she’s the best in the book too. I always say I slogged through 7 years of that show just for her character. 😂

message 39: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Dusk hahah right!? I thought it fit perfectly😉

message 40: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Meags I’ve never finished the show, but I watched the earlier seasons twice or so, and I remember not liking Spencer at all when I watched it when I was really young, but when I was older I thought she was by far the most realistic, smartest, most likable and least annoying one of the bunch lol. Aria was always a fav of mine too though

Persephone's Pomegranate Oh, I remember this show. It was all the rage. I gave it a shot, but it just didn't grab me. I heard the finale was a letdown, so I'm relieved I didn't invest too much time in it. Aria's relationship with her teacher gave me the ick.

message 42: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Persephone Aria’s relationship with her teacher was done pretty differently in the book than it was in the show; it seems to me like the book is willing to show how damn creepy it is instead of romanticizing it like the tv series did😅🫣

message 43: by Rose (new)

Rose :) ♡⋆ (semi-hiatus) great review! yeah i get what u mean by trashy and addictive ahah- those don't work for me in books usually but in SHOWS they r just perfect to binge watch!! (I love the PLL show)

message 44: by A (new)

A Mac Those are a bunch of awful parents! I'm trying to remember how much of a role they played in the show, but it's been years since I binged it. I hope the series starts to branch out and get more interesting! Great review, Imme 💜

message 45: by Diella (new)

Diella M Love the review! Andrew does exist in the TV show and plays a larger roll towards the late seasons.

message 46: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Rose Honestly, I do agree with you that those traits work better in tv shows than in books, which is probably why I liked the tv series quite a bit more than this😉 Still, it was fun too!

message 47: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Mac Although most of the parents were awful in the tv series as well, they were FAR worse in this book😭

message 48: by Imme (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imme van Gorp @Diella Oh my god, DOES HE!? I could have shown I’d never met his character before, but then again, I don’t think I’ve seen the last two or three seasons, so that could explain that😉😉
