Just not my cup of tea. I know it sounds a weird thing to say, but it's as if she was speaking an alien language. Sometimes you meet people, you talk, and there is an instant sense of connection and understanding - but this was the complete opposite. I couldn't even bring myself to make the effort to comprehend what she was discussing.

Many of my friends think that Brené Brown is superb - plus she has been given outstanding ratings and reviews here on GR. I think I will try some of her TED talks or You Tube lectures. It may be that these will be more accessible to me.

CanadianReader I’m not surprised, Caroline. A bunch of new age mumbo jumbo. This is not a serious psychologist/social scientist. I know someone who’s a follower of Brown and uses the same inane lingo as Brown. I have zero patience for the author. Zero. However, she is a publishing phenomenon.

Gosh - I have great respect for your opinions Canadian Reader - and it's very interesting to hear that you did not get on with her either. That's cheered me up a bit!

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ I've had her books recommended to me more than once, Caroline, but I'm sure she speaks an alien language for me too. I can't stand this kind of over-the-top positivity and wishful-thinking-makes-your-dreams-come-true BS.

Hope your next book is better.

Jan-Maat perhaps her TED talks might be even less accessible ! :p

Ah, interesting to know that another GR friend whose ideas I respect isn't a fan....

You may well be right, but for the sake of friends who do like her work I'm going to suck it and see....

Caroline, A lot of "new age" stuff grates on my nerves. :-)

Yes, I agree and feel the same way.

Ah that's interesting. I guess I've read hardly any new age material. For sure I know ideas like "the law of attraction" don't appeal to me.

I've read VERY little because I know it's not my thing. Ditto re the law of attraction which is one of the new age philosophies. ETA: I have a couple of friends who believe in that sort of stuff though.

I think most of my friends would resist the wilder side of new age philosophies, but I do have a few who like this author.... 0_0

Rowan Never a good sign when authors begin speaking in alien language Haha Great review, Caroline, even though I hope you enjoy your next read more! 😊

Yes indeed - alien language doesn't help! Thank you Rowan.

Ian I've only just seen this review Caroline. It didn't appear in my GR Feed.

I hadn't heard of the author until reading your review, but seeing your review prompted me to look at her GR page, where it says

"Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston where she holds the Huffington Foundation Brené Brown Endowed Chair at The Graduate College of Social Work."

I don't know the full details of this arrangement, but the title makes it sound like she "holds" a position that was created purely for her.

Seems an odd arrangement, but perhaps this sort of thing is common in US universities.

She is incredibly popular with a lot of people and perhaps the people at Houston felt she deserved an academic platform. (TBH I'm not sure how these things are done, either in the UK or the US.) Suffice it to say her classes are not something I would sign up for....

Yes, I completely agree with you. I think I swing the opposite way - I'm actually more attracted to very practical ideas. Perhaps for that reason I find things like Stoicism and CBT to be a lot more attracitve.
