did not like it

I've seen this book everywhere. So I picked it up to see what it was all about.

All I have to say is that this novel feels icky and pathetic. I DNF'ed probably around 1/3 of the novel.

A 45 year-old married woman with a kid believes it's so important to feel beautiful and desirable by men before her beauty is lost. That part is sort of understandable. But, would you just act up without thinking of the consequences? Your actions affect other people's lives in a big way. I wouldn't. But the protagonist does it without even think about it. It's all about her. What she is doing is pretty icky, but she criticizes others' actions as "icky". If your inner wealth looks like this after having lived and learned for 45 years, that's pathetic.

I just couldn't stand being in the head of the silly woman. Life is too short. I want to spend my time reading better books.

Mia This is exactly how I felt reading this. I did finish it and it didn’t get better!

I'm so sorry to hear that you suffered until the end. But at the same time I'm glad I DNFed. ;-)

Mona S I skimmed through it in my bookstore and put it back on the shelf.

Hahahahaha.. I could imagine the scene!

Donna By The Sea I only made it to chapter 4. I don't like her character. She is flat, dull & uninteresting. Her fantasies gave me the icks, and I enjoy erotica! At 60 I'm baffled that a woman in her 40s could be this directionless & selfish when she has a 7 year old child. And what's with the gender neutral pronoun for a kid that age? I came here to read reviews to encourage me to keep going, but I'm actually relieved to see I'm not alone. This is only the 2nd book in my life I've DNFed. I normally give them 6 chapters. I just can't. Bummed I bought it rather than borrowed from the library.

I feel for you. Especially that you bought the book! And, you can't even gift it to your friend because you hate it. But this book told us that we were lucky indeed that we have better lives (and inner wealth) than this protagonist. ;-)

Kimball Mcilvaine 100% icky, pathetic and I’ll add cringy, embarrassing and very strange behavior. Having sex with a dying newborn in same bed. MORTIFYING!

message 10: by Charismatic (new)

Charismatic Ms. July has spent her life as an "edgy" performance artist, who broke into film some years ago... but 2 decades have passed and she's not young or "cool enough" anymore. She is desperate to be relevant.

BTW: all this "find yourself through promiscuous sex" stuff was done in the EARLY 70s by Erica Jong and others, and much, much better.

Sarah If you didn’t finish you don’t know that the arc of the story has things going very badly and her having to recover and re-enter a real life. The last 25% was the best part of the book.

message 12: by Gina (new) - added it

Gina I was thinking of not finishing, but after reading that Sarah said the last 25% of the book is the best I may have to go on!
