really liked it
bookshelves: mark-harmon, and-so-this-is-grad-school, death-is-not-the-end

and that's me finishing my last book for this class. and i managed to read it the same day i watched coraline, so i'm a little gaimaned out right now. this book was enjoyable - it is a little episodic-with-overarching-storyline number about a child living in a graveyard with the dead after a man slaughters his family with a knife. typical newbery-award fare. there are a few very memorable scenes, and i think i developed a crush on silas, but i have too much of a headache now for anything else. maybe more?

okay - now my class is officially over and i don't have a headache. this is what i learned in class today: 1) no one writes fantasy novels for adults anymore. 2) young boys won't want to read this book because it starts out with a graphic murder, and little boys don't like that because it's too much like a slasher film. 3) there aren't any other books that take place in a graveyard with characters who are both living and dead. 4) with this book, neil gaiman is trying to jump on the graphic novel bandwagon. in short - there are some stupid stupid motherfuckers in my class. i just sit there silently, and draw pictures of samuel pepys. and i didn't even get my paper back today as promised. i hate waiting for grades.

Greg Reading your extended review I was thinking I wish we had a picture of high socks, just to give the other readers of your review an image of what the 'man' who said that boys don't like books with graphic murders in them looks like.

karen he looks like a gary larsen character, crossed with a marshmallow.

Greg i guess that's pretty accurate. that description makes it sound like your trying to jump on the graphic novel bandwagon....

karen looking back now that the class is over, i can laugh, but honestly, i fear for the future of libraries if that is who will be in charge.

karen i drew him on fire.

Greg is this going to be where i come in to get your samuel pepys drawing on to the internet?

were you also drawing a ghost graduating from library school today?

karen lets see... yup - graduating ghost, bossy turnip, this looks like a vagina, but it might be something else... oh! a drawing of high-socks (he of "boys dont like slasher films" fame) some cherries... hahhaha mary louisa molesworth... i dont scan... who scans?? (im not much of an artist, btw - it looks more like grace zabriskie than pepys)

Greg i'm over the east coast west coast thing, now i'm just insanely jealous that you've read the new ellroy novel.

i want a picture of morrissey.

not, as in, 'hairdresser on fire'...
but, like, up in flames, burning alive.
yeah?

karen okay i have the montambo and brian pictures ready. i just need to find a way to make them go on the computer.

message 35: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg I can lend you my camera at work on tuesday and you can take the pictures.

karen okay - the pictures have been taken. i hope you guys understand that these are just glorified class-doodles - i am no artist. but i colored these so they would show up better. greg will slap them on the computer tomorrow.

message 37: by brian (new)

brian WOO-HOO!

karen hmm. he was supposed to put them up. lets bother him until he does it.

message 39: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg they will be up in a few moments, right now the sock monsters are going up.

message 44: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Nicely done.

message 45: by Jen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jen I'm not sure which one I like best. The fire has its charms, to be sure, but it is hard to go up against a snail like that.

karen i make better monsters than drawings.
