This book was chosen by my book club. So this was my June, 2024 book club read. Would I have chosen this book on my own? No. Was I happy to give it a chance? Yes I was, as I am open to “expanding my horizons. However this book did not work out for me or any of the other members of my book club unfortunately.

All I have to say is this book is bizarre. An unnamed narrator tells the story of how a smog has taken over. The smog destroyed America and Southeast Asia first, and then a year and a half later it reached Europe. The smog has destroyed all the crops, sheep, and cattle. Food is made with a processed flour/meal that is highly addictive. Our unnamed narrator is a chef who gets a job in Italy - she was able to land this job by lying on her resume.

In Italy, our unnamed chef/narrator meets her rich boss and his daughter Aida. Here she also gets acquainted with foods, such as strawberries, that she hasn’t seen in years. She becomes friends with Aida and is taken to a lab where animals are reproduced. She is also taken to a place where grass is planted, called “the land of milk and honey.

None of us were really sure what the point of this boring, depressing book was. We have several thoughts and theories (way too many to get into in this review). I mean, our food sources could certainly be destroyed one day. We already have Bill Gates manufacturing genetically engineered foods, and they’re already selling Impossible Meat at the stores- so maybe this book was a glimpse into our future. And it seemed that only the rich will be able to eat the real foods that are left, and live in proper housing to protect them from the smog

Regardless, this was a weird book. This wasn’t my cup of tea, and I honestly couldn’t even bring myself to finish this book. Since I only read about half of this book, I have decided not to rate this book as it wouldn’t be a fair rating.

Cindy Sheppard Gidge hats off for your honesty..... sounds like a punishment to endure too. You nailed it with how it's going to be with food plants being burned down++, farmers everywhere being drove into bankruptcy , food shortages big time( people dropping like flies since the shots) and with shortages it makes it easier to control how much we are allowed to purchase / social credit coming/engineered food ;yuck/ insect plants......... Oh "goodie", this is probably very well a glimpse ahead sadly; unfortunately.

How in the world do such strange books win awards anyway I wonder??

message 2: by Jayme (new)

Jayme Sounds depressing too! Hope you love your next! ❤️

message 3: by Rosh (new)

Rosh If everyone at your book club didn't get the book, something surely went wrong in its execution. Book club discussions are most fun when opinions are divided, not when everyone loves or hates the book almost unanimously.
That said, I truly appreciate not just your honesty in this review, but also your decision of not rating this one as you didn't complete it. I don't get reviewers who read barely a quarter of a book and then give it 1 star as it "was horrible." Sorry this was just a dud for you, Rachel. I hope your book club pick for next month works out far better! ❤️

Cindy, that point was brought up that this book would probably be turned into a movie and win an Oscar and a bunch of other awards- and we’d all be there just shaking our heads. However, I do feel this is a glimpse into our future with the food plants being burned down, our loss of farmers, engineered foods, and food shortages. It’s actually quite scary if you really think about it.
I do wish that this book was written in a more interesting way/format, because I think that it could have opened a lot of people’s eyes to what’s going on

Thank you so much, Rosh! 💗 Even though we unanimously did not like this book at book club, it did give us a lot to talk about. Lol! The execution of the book was horrible (in my opinion), because it was like the author was trying to write in poetry- when this wasn’t a poetic story There were no italics used, and we never knew when she was jumping from past to present. So very weird.
I’ve also learned not to rate books I don’t finish anymore- it’s not a fair judgement on my end (although I think this one would have been on the lower end 😬).

Thanks, Srivalli! The execution went totally wrong in this book. I wasn’t the only person who could not finish this book in the group, and with it being a short book- it took the others weeks to finish it

Thank you, Terrie! 💗 This is definitely a book that everyone struggled with in my book club. Half of us couldn’t finish it, and the other half took weeks to read it.

Taste_in_Books You are definitely not alone in your thoughts. As much as I loved her debut novel, I just did not get along with this one. Too bizarre and very disappointing..

A Mac This sounds like a tough one, especially since most of y'all didn't find anything much to like about it. It's certainly frustrating to not find anything engaging or meaningful, and I'm glad you decided not to lose any more time to it. Helpful review, Rachel!

You’re welcome, A! This was a tough book to read. Although we didn’t like this book, it did bring up many topics for discussion- so I guess that is one plus to this book. :)

Shelley's Book Nook It's not you, it's the book. If your book club all agree that it's not a great book then I'd say something is wrong with the book. I love your review, Rachel. Very clear in your critiques. I hope you're enjoying The Lion Women of Tehran. 🤗💕

Thank you so much, Shelley! 💗 I’m so glad everyone in my book club agreed (or maybe not, because we do want someone to like this book), that this wasn’t a very good book. It was a very good book for discussion though. However, I am loving The Lion Women of Tehran!! I wish I had more time to finish it up this week! 🤗
