** spoiler alert ** I have found a new series that I love!!! This book totally surpassed all of my expectations that I had for it. I had not read any of Nora Roberts aka J.D. Robb's books so I was unsure of what I would think of it. I never expected to read my first book and be so surprised at the level of storytelling.
The book is set somewhat in the future in New York City (I was not certain I would like the future setting, but it works out great). There are not a lot of differences except the fun gadgets that have been developed to make life easier...It kind of reminded me of watching the "Jetson's" cartoon when I was younger.
Eve is a detective that is in charge of finding a serial murderer. One of the crimes involves a powerful senator's granddaughter so Eve is immediately told it is a highly sensitive case. It is at this point that she meets Roarke. Roarke...Roarke...Roarke...How do words describe this character that J.D. Robb has created? He instantly reminded me of another favorite character of mine from the "Fever" series by Karen Marie Moning...Barrons. I do not know what except I instantly liked him!
Eve and Roarke have an instant chemistry and the reader knows their relationship is going to be very special. In the beginning, Eve treats Roarke as a suspect, but soon figures out he had nothing to do with the murders.
Eve is a very hardnosed detective, but is quite vulnerable too. There are many layers to her that the first book just started uncovering. Roarke is also complex and I have a feeling it is going to take a lot of books before readers are ever going to learn all about him. I am so excited to have found a new series and I cannot wait to read the next one. Thank-you to all of my goodreads friends who suggested I start this series!!!

Dina And another reader falls hard for Roarke... He's just perfect! *sighs*

With close to 30 books in this series so far, you're in for a treat, Alexis. As in every series, some books are better than others, but they're all good, IMHO. Just a word of advice: don't read all of them back to back, or you'll get burned out. :)

Danielle The Book Huntress Great review, Ally. I will move this one up in the tbr pile, since we are sympatico on a lot of books. :)

Thanks Dina for the advice! I HAVE to read the second book right away, but I will probably switch to another author after that one. Eve and Roarke are the kinds of characters I like to read about. I can't wait to get going with the next one!

Hi Danielle!
Oh my goodness...I think you will be in for an unexpected surprise by this book! I am really ashamed to admit that I never thought Nora Roberts was probably an author I would like...I always figured how could a person write so many books and have them be quality stories? I shouldn't have been so judgemental because she clearly is a gifted writer. These characters she creates with Eve and Roarke are really something else. Roarke is exactly the kind of hero you and I like to read about. He is self-made, powerful, and protective of the people he cares about. Roarke doesn't allow many people into his life, but when he does...it is because that person means a lot to him. Swoon.....! I think I could easily become an Eve and Roarke fanatic! LOL!!!

Danielle The Book Huntress Roarke definitely sounds pretty nice! Eve sounds interesting and someone I'd like and respect. I read a few of her books a long time ago. I haven't seen too many of the stories written by her that called my name, but this series is definitely something I'd like with the futuristic aspects.

new_user If the series wasn't so darned long, I would definitely read it, LOL.

Dina As someone who reads Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb, I can say that her writing under each pen name is very different from the other. I like both, but it isn't unusual to find readers who love the In Death series and can't stand the NR books.

I thought the same thing too before I started this book. I think you would be in for a treat with this series!

Thanks Dina...I did just get her two Wedding books that she has out now. I bought them last week because I had read a lot of great comments about them. I tend not to read a lot of contemporary romances (I prefer historicals and paranormals, but these looked good). I am just mad at myself for not giving her a chance earlier. These will be great books to read while I wait for my other favorite authors to come out with books in their series too.

I'll be forever thankful for having discovered this series right from the start. I've been reading (and rereading) these books for 10 years now, so I've never gotten overwhelmed by how long the series is.

I started reading the Eve Dallas books from the beginning and reread them often. I really think you should overcome your fear of the number of books and read them all. Unlike a lot of the newer series, the books can be read separately. I consider the In Death series my favorite series, and of course, I am in love with Roarke.

new_user See, if these books can be read separately, that makes me think that they're episodic, and that's not the kind of series I like. I like series with an overall plot and some end in sight. And if there is an overall plot, the number of books makes me think that she's dragging it out.

I don't know why I keep putting this series off...I *like* the fact that there are so many books. :-) I definitely need to start it soon.

Ally72 Hi Karen,
I was the same way and kept thinking I would read the series at some point. I am not a big mystery reader and I wasn't sure about the futuristic aspect of it. I just decided to try the first one a couple of days ago and I am so glad that I did. I love Eve's character and there aren't enough words to describe Roarke. There is nothing like finding a new author/series and being excited about it! I would definitely give it a try if you are maybe thinking about it. This series has me hooked!

NU, they're episodic and each book revolves around solving a murder case. You get to find new things about Eve and Roarke's past - they're both tortured characters - and you see their relationship develop as the series progresses, but there isn't an overall plot per se.

message 16: by WhatShouldIRead (new)

WhatShouldIRead Hmmm, Roarke reminded you of Barrons?? Interesting. I love Barrons.

I had this book and gave it away thinking I'd never read it. May have to get it again. :)

Ally72 Hi Susan,
I wasn't sure I would be interested in a romantic suspense book by Nora Roberts, but I was so WRONG!!! I definitely am reminded of Barrons with Roarke and this series is addicting. I made myself stop after the second book because I don't want to read them too fast. If you are still thinking about it, I would give it a chance. I just love this series...almost as much as the "Fever" books!

Thanks for the info, Dina. This series doesn't sound like it's for me, but I can see why so many people do. These sound like interesting characters. :)

Catherine Great review! I really enjoyed the book and thought the series has a lot of potential. I really liked that the author had Eve stay true to her detective role and continue to treat Roarke as a suspect even when she didn't necessarily want to.

Ally72 Thanks Catherine! Roarke and Eve are really complicated characters and we get glimpses of their pasts as the series progresses. I am still learning new things about them with each book I read. There are some fantastic secondary characters (Officer Peabody) that are going to pop up in the third or fourth book that you will love. These characters will kind of be part of Eve's team as she solves cases.

Catherine Cool. It'll be fun watching Eve develop her core group.
