A spendthrift couple with a son and two daughters has expensive tastes and lives beyond their means. Therefore, they live in perpetual financial anxiety.
”And so the house came to be haunted by the unspoken phrase: There must be more money! There must be more money! The children could hear it all the time though nobody said it aloud.
Even the rocking horse and other toys heard it. Paul, the child, wants to know why the family has no money and is told that his father has no luck, which makes him wonder if luck means money. From his mother, he learns: ”If you’re lucky you have money. That’s why it’s better to be born lucky than rich.
The equation of luck with money to silence the whispers makes Paul eager to seek the clue to luck. On the rocking horse in his nursery, he embarks on an extraordinary, perilous, and unpredictable journey that verges on the magical and supernatural.
This sobering story on greed and the stranglehold of money can be read here:
Big thanks to Cecily and Sara whose reviews led me to this fascinating but grim tale.

Oh good! Dolors, I hope you will like Lawrence's short story. It's masterfully written.

Thank you, Ilse. How apt to describe this story as dark and unsettling! You had me intrigued about 'Odour of Chrysanthemums.' :-)

Thank you, Maureen. Lawrence was spot on about human avarice.

Short story binge currently running. I am impressed with Lawrence's writing. I am enjoying sampling the writing of several authors I have yet to read or haven't read in years.
I can newly appreciate your review now that I've read the story.
