I don’t want to think. Don’t want to . . .

"Clever people have been pointing out for a long time that happiness is like good health: when it’s there, you don’t notice it. But when the years have passed, how you do re-member happiness, oh, how you do remember it!" Thus begins this semi-autobiographical short story.

Set in Russia, during the 1917 October Revolution, the story revolves around a doctor and his nightmarish descent into darkness due to his addiction to morphine.

Oh, how stupid, empty it all is. It’s hopeless!

Serving in the Red Cross during the First World War, Bulgakov was injured and himself succumbed to the grip of morphine addiction for a while, before giving up his medical career and becoming a writer.

Ilse On health and happiness, how true Bulgakov's words ring, Helga - your pithy encapsulation of this story makes me wish to re-read it. Last year we started watching a British series based on his A Country Doctor's Notebook, but I was too squeamish to watch it entirely (A Young doctor's Notebook).

Thanks, Ilse! I haven't read A Young doctor's Notebook yet. Have you read his masterpiece The Master and Margarita?

path Adding this to my TBR pile. I quite like what I’ve read of Bulgakov, but I’ve never read his short fiction.

Hope you like it! I had only read Heart of a Dog and The Master and Margarita by him.
