it was amazing
bookshelves: dystopia

The author is right, I think I‘m going to “bloodydamn love these books. At least I loved this first one, even if I’m not sure how I feel about Brown‘s cocky statement. The use of the present tense and the GraphicAudio production I devoured along the way really made me fell the urgency, the immediacy of it all. Darrow is a character I found intriguing; his confidence and competence drew me in. It also helps that Brown is insanely good at introspection, which made Darrow come alive in my mind. I also really loved the author‘s prose, which I appreciate even more now that I recently read a trilogy with subpar prose. It really spoke to me and made me feel all kinds of invested.

I haven’t read (science fiction) dystopias in a while and this was a great way to return to that genre. I can’t wait to continue with this series though I‘m a bit scared of where this is going to go; this first book was already intense and I‘ve heard it becomes even more so.

PS: This is a vacation review, short and sweet.

Aaron Oh man, my friend, I am so glad you started this series. It is one of the most beautiful, bloody, romantic, and tragic pieces of science fiction I’ve ever read. It really needs a two trilogy (the second is actually a quadrilogy) setup, because Pierce Brown is not shy about killing beloved characters. His dangerous situations are not empty threats, but he’s not a sadist either. Everything is in service of the story - and what a truly wonderful and terrible story it is. The fall of one empire, and the struggle to see something new - better - born in its place.

I will warn you, that I think this started as dystopian teen stuff and evolved beyond that after book 3. The second major arc is much more of a true grimdark sci-fi series, and I can tell you that as someone who battles depression and anxiety, there were a couple of times I had to put down one of the books in particular because I just needed to see a win. I needed the Rohirrim to crest the hill at dawn, to save a besieged Helm’s Deep, you know?

But as we wait for the final book in the saga, it has been one of the most engrossing, rich, and ultimately rewarding pieces of fiction I’ve ever read.

Onward, my friend. I can’t wait to discuss these with you. Enjoy vacation!

Shreyas Nice review, Anna! I haven't read this series yet, but I plan to read them in the future. I need to clear out my pile of unread books first, though!

Anna [Bran. San. Stan] @Aaron: Aaron, it is so good to hear from you! And thank you so much for your poetic assessment of the series. You find such beautiful words to describe these books; apart from their beauty, they also really help me navigate them. And I totally understand what you mean about needing the Rohirrim to come to the rescue. I feel the first book gave me enough to not lose heart, but the second book is much more difficult to endure. There rarely seem to wins, at least so far. I‘m happy to experience these engrossing, rich and rewarding pieces of fiction, as you put it so eloquently, and to embark on yet another book journey with you! 😊 Onward!

Anna [Bran. San. Stan] @Shreyas: Thank you, Shreyas! Ah, the ever expanding TBR, I know it well. 😂 I hope you‘ll enjoy this series as well once you get to it.

Chris Lee (away) I am so glad you are enjoying the genre and I cannot wait to see how you enjoy the rest of the series. This is one I need to revisit. ;) Hope the vacation is exciting!!

Anna [Bran. San. Stan] @Chris: Thank you, Chris! 😊 I‘ve just finished book 2 and it was spectacular, but also really hard to stomach. I hope you do give the series another shot some day. My vacation is actually the opposite, it’s very relaxing, but then it was meant to be. 😂
