A phenomenal first 245 pages. Stephen King knows how to create such an ominous atmosphere, I shudder and hold myself tighter as I read. There's much more to horror than creepy details and King knows how to make the most mundane situations and elements frightening. In 11/22/63, he manages to combine horror (including plenty of nods to his other literary works) with science-fiction and a study on small-town values and nostalgia (misguided, as he points out) of simpler, more innocent times.
It's in the novel's very large middle section, the part of the story that is intent on entrenching the reader in what it is to live in the past and what that means for the character on a day-to-day level, that the main plot all but disappears. After 300-400 pages of this, I found myself disengaged.
Still, I am definitely reading much more of King's work because I consider him a master, even if 11/22/63 didn't end up being quite everything I hoped.

"FINALLY reading this and I must say, it's hard to put down. Feels good after a semi-slumpish last two reading months. What is it about Stephen King that just pulls you headfirst into a story?"

"I suppose the breakneck speed at which I was turning the pages couldn't last forever. There are good things here, but the pace has slowed significantly. I think it's because I know certain events are years away...I have to be patient and trust Mr. King..."
