Crooked House has all sorts of what we’d call bent characters. Everyone has motive, no solid alibis and are all placed to commit the crime. Christie herself pulls a twist at the end.

In the introduction to my copy, Christie says this was one of her easiest to write but admits the characters and plot had been rolling around in her head for some time. I’d guess that would make it easier to write. She says it’s one of her favorites, confirmed by the fact it’s also a fan favorite. It is one of her stories without one of her famous detectives, similar in that respect to And Then There Were None-also a fan favorite. It is untraditional like that book. I miss Poirot. It’s necessary for the “detective here to be slightly dim.

Fiza Pathan Excellent review Pam! I loved your perceptive review on this Christie favorite & glad you rewarded it 4 stars! When I read it way back in the year 2003 in the 9th grade during my 2nd term exams, I was addicted to it & just flabbergasted by the ending. I was too naive & never knew such people (no spoilers) could commit such heinous crimes & that really spooked me out. But when I'm spooked out, I work even better & so did very well at my exams, especially my bête noir Mathematics. I agree with you, one would actually have to be quite dim in the head these days to not realize who the killer was. I guess I was dimmer than dim so I was fascinated! My school library cover had a little yellow chick on it, that should have been telling! Hope your next Christie read is a winner! Happy Reading to you this hectic week in August! Enjoy your day! :)

Pam Thanks Fiza. Always good to hear a writer’s perspective. I think times have changed since Christie wrote this book. It’s a pretty common character devise now but must have been very shocking at the time.

Pam Razvan—if you like Christie, you’ll probably like it. If you liked And Then There Were None, you’ll probably really enjoy it!
