The book begins with a horrific discovery:
A Vermont teen girl is found dead in a hayfield circled by vultures.
Had the book focused more on police procedural and adult dialogue, my star rating would have been elevated.
If you enjoy YA ghost story thrillers with teen angst vibes and abrupt endings, Shari Lapena's newest release is for you.
I respect and applaud authors for venturing out of comfort zones and into new territory but Shari Lapena’s new direction simply did not resonate with me.
I listened to the audiobook read by January LaVoy, Jorjeana Marie, and Barrett Leddy.
Even January LaVoy could not save this book.
My first one-star Shari Lapena book.
And my first one-star January Lavoy book, too!

Wow...January LaVoy always heightens my reading experiences. I don't care for YA anymore, so I'm going to skip this one. Too bad...

January LaVoy is one of my very, very favorite narrators. You are correct: she usually heightens reading experiences. But not this time. Onto better!

I always hate it when an author I really like, releases a book way below their usual standard of writing. Great review though. Always difficult to write a bad review even when it’s necessary.
😯 one star!? For Lapena? No wonder you were shocked!!!! I am so sad to hear this reads like YA...that's not like her at all. I'm so sorry this was a miss for you Jayne, I'm a little scared to read it now...but maybe I'll just push it down the list for the time being. Hope your next read is absolutely fabulous! 💞

Oh no!! So sorry this was a disappointment for you- although I love your review - your opening sentence is hilarious! Lol! I’ve seen lots of mixed reviews for this book, so I think I might hold off on it for a while. Great review, Jayne!
Ugh, disappointing
Some authors need to stick to what they can handle best. Angela Marsons is another such example. Fabulous at police procedurals, boring in romcoms. Appreciate your honest review, Jayne. Sorry this didn't work out better.

Sorry, it didn't work for you. I hope your enjoying your current read. I read it and enjoyed it! I skipped pairing it with the audio January Lavoy is one of my favourite narrators.
