First, I have to get this off my chest, because it appears half a dozen times in the story: It's EdmOnd, Oklahoma, not EdmUnd!! It ticks me off when an author doesn't fact check. I suppose there could have been some kind of autocorrect but in that case, proofread!
Whew! Okay, better now. This is the second short story I've read where a dating couple has planned a trip, the man cancels at the last minute and the woman goes on the trip alone. Is this some kind of trend? In this case, it was a trip to the Galapagos Islands. It was interesting reading about all the exotic wildlife while the details of the romantic entanglement spun out in the background. If the author hadn't screwed up the city name (I live 40 miles away from Edmond, what can I say, it irritated me), I probably would have given the story four stars. It's not Hilderbrand's best but it is enjoyable.

It drives me absolutely insane when the audio narrator mispronounces place names! The author should have a sheet of words that the audio talent may not know.

Although I don't do audiobooks (they put me to sleep), I agree. My pet peeve, since I grew up in the South, is people from other areas trying to mimic a Southern accent. Some are pretty decent, but others just grate on my ears.
It was a difficult switch to audiobooks, but I love them. And audio performances have improved ten fold since when I first started listening. But worse than mispronounced place names are when the narrator doesn’t know how to pronounce basic words. Few pronounce “dour� correctly and it’s about half and half on “balk� but words you hear in every day life shouldn’t be a stretch.
We used to do long car trips to visit relatives and we would listen to books on tape (then books on CD). But if I try listening at home in my comfy chair, I'm out like a light. There's no excuse for mispronouncing words when you can just google the pronunciation. Preparation, narrators!
