really liked it

The following is a true story:

Me, in a San Franscisco bar reading Orientalism.

The blonde girl next to me reading over my shoulder: "So what's Orientalism?"

I explain as best I can in a couple sentences.

Her: "There are so many isms in Asia - like Buddhism and Taoism. You know what book you should read? The Tao of Poo. It's sooo good. It's, like, the perfect way to teach Americans about Eastern Religion."

Horrified, I look back to my book and take a sip of beer.

or another mystery of some sort

message 3: by J (new) - rated it 3 stars

J couldn't that girl be non-blonde? ;)

message 4: by Wendi (new) - added it

Wendi YES!

message 5: by Jesse (new)

Jesse There was no need to specify her hair colour, really.

Isra :D

message 7: by Cristina (new) - added it

Cristina LOL This encounter sums up my first trip alone in the West coast for two months. I realized the average person there talks like a TARD!!!

Garry the isms actually started in Europe. cause in asian languages there is no isms on the end words. all ism such as racism. colonialism, socialism. communism , capitalism etc the list goes on ... like i said the origin where it all started is from Europe. it is part of white identity these isms as well.

Felipe Arruda Now that's the best review I've read about Orientalism :-)

message 10: by Yasmeen (new) - added it

Yasmeen Very sad because that girl votes too. Now we know how we end up with those politicians.

message 11: by Ziryab (new) - added it

Ziryab Edward Said would've smiled if he heard this story :-)

message 12: by Paul (new) - added it

Paul Choufani wow haha. hilarious, for the archives

message 13: by Scott (new)

Scott Montopoli You missed a grand scoring opportunity.

message 14: by Carah (new) - added it

Carah Naseem @Rhinaris what? no. a stupid girl is a stupid girl, and one has the right to not buy her a drink, given the circumstances. millions of women getting beaten every day, and you think this is misogyny? smh.
-sez this feminist

Sidney Funny but the Tao of Pooh is pretty good

message 17: by Jim (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jim Botulism is not so great

message 18: by James (new) - added it

James I also read that story and thought: "I like the Tao of Poo."

Bashar Mudallal hilarious

message 20: by Lama (new) - added it

Lama Aisar no need to descripe the girl's haircolour

message 21: by Fusprig12 (new) - added it

Fusprig12 As many others have said, no need to reinforce with the choice of wording both the dumb blonde and (arguably) dumb woman stereotypes.

message 22: by N (new) - added it

N Is it possible to give this anecdote 5/5? I would have reacted similarly...how cringeworthy.

message 23: by Tara (new)

Tara Little dying. cannot stop laughing. cannot.

message 24: by Tara (new)

Tara Little ps. scott, you're gross. and whomever is defending Tao of Pooh/Te of Piglet ain't miles ahead on the smartometer. last, no tard, please. truly gross, any context.

message 25: by Aritra (new)

Aritra Chatterjee Can't stop laughing!!

Erica Wow, I just read these comments for the first time in a while. For the record, I'm also a blonde woman and did not intend any sexist or blonde-ist commentary. I guess I could have said a "person whose gender and appearance are not relevant to the story." Apologies to anyone offended, but I am somewhat offended to everyone who assumed I'm a man, when you could have just looked at my profile.

message 27: by Aritra (new)

Aritra Chatterjee Hilarious!

message 28: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Miley I was scrolling down a list with this book, and 40 spots down was the Tao of Poo

message 29: by Todd (new)

Todd Hmm. Not one word about the book. Get over yourself Erica.

message 30: by Tanasis (new)

Tanasis I find it great that she mentions the hair color. In an other place similar minds would say something along the lines "there was no need to say you were in a bar or drunk beer".

message 31: by Kirsten (new) - added it

Kirsten In a way your drinking buddy perfectly encapsulated what Said's book is all about.

message 32: by Beauregard (new)

Beauregard LaMontagne i am so offended. did you really need to mention that she is a human being? was it necessary to even involve a second sentient life form? couldn鈥檛 you have condensed it down and simply written the word 鈥減ooh鈥 and let it stand on its own merit? like this:

pooh. the end.

okay, enough with the ridiculousness. cute story, erica, exactly as written. :-)

Muhammad Sohail Hilarious! For past three years I have switched from car to railcar mode of travel partly because I can read a book while travelling. This is usual that people think of me a 鈥減rofessor鈥 just because I鈥檓 reading a book lol

Bastian G. The idea as generally defined in the book is too broad to be meaningful so I鈥檇 say that conversation went as well it it could have

message 35: by Shannan (new) - added it

message 40: by Matthew (new) - added it

Matthew R. Hanson 鈥nd that girl grew up to be Taylor Swift. Which means the OP grew up to be Kanye. Which means Edward Said is Beyonc茅.

message 41: by Matthew (new) - added it

Matthew R. Hanson @iskra best comment on a review ever lol 馃檹馃檹

Karen OP's hubris in thinking he can explain Orientalism to a layperson in like 1 minute.

message 43: by Twilight (new)

Twilight O. 鈽 This is one of the most baffling comment sections I've ever encountered.

message 44: by Westley (new)

Westley Dang I laughed so effing hard when I read this review hahahaha

Also laughing that people think OP is a guy

Mdolphin76 Why the hell were you reading orientalism in a bar? I get that it's a San Francisco bar, but still.
