** spoiler alert **
Overall rating of the manhwa: 4.25
Define the Relationship was cute, hilarious at times and incredibly horny. Usually that's about all I need from a manhwa to get a high rating, but I did have some issues that I'll talk about at the end.
Overall this was a really good story. As someone who stopped reading omegaverse manhwas because of the dynamics between alphas and omegas (the level of toxicity that is the norm), getting back to the omegaverse with alpha x alpha dynamics was a good thing. It's different than what I'm used to in a good way. I loved Lyle's character. I just wanted to give him a hug sometimes. Ash was a big mystery to be for a big part of the story (since it's mostly told from Lyle's POV).
There were many moments in the story where I felt like I was missing some important piece of information, but to be fair this is originally a novel, therefore there are some things omitted and parts that can't translate properly to this format. Thankfully I read some comments with useful context, so the confusion only lasted a few chapters.
Lyle and Ash's relationship, at its core, is so so tender. They're really complex characters and their development made the story so interesting. We have Lyle's POV, where he can't stop second-guessing himself, always telling us as readers how he's feeling and what makes him insecure. But Ash sees a whole different person. To Ash Lyle's a mystery. He can't get a read on him because Lyle has spent his whole life trying so hard not to be a burden, that he can no longer externalize his feelings, he's always expressionless. At first I was frustrated with Ash because he seemed like a fuckboy and a bit sus at times. To be honest I was just waiting for him to show his true colors. But once you truly get his perspective, without taking into account Lyle's POV, it makes sense for Ash to be detached and goofy, he doesn't want to get hurt after all.
This is the type of "miscommunication" that I don't mind. It allowed the story to be a bit angsty and the romantic moments even better. I was giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. The things these two said to each other and how their relationship changed for the better once they defined it, was great. That's the progress and growth I love to read!
I had two issues with the story. One of the first intense spicy scenes between these two, Ash started to get rough with Lyle, and I had a problem with the way he handled it. I know for some people this was nothing, knowing that the usual omegaverse manhwas are so much worse. But as someone that is just starting to get back into reading it, it annoyed me how Ash never checked in with Lyle the things he wanted to include in their sex life.
Lyle has no experience receiving and at the time his experiences having sex with omegas were not satisfying anymore. He never enjoyed sex because of the pressure of his responsabilities. Spending his ruts with omegas was rutine, no feelings or attachment involved. Then comes Ash, introducing him to this new dynamic in bed and Lyle's absolutely overwhelmed. Desire, lust and pleasure he has never felt before. In this context, Ash taking him over his limit even though Lyle asked him repeatedly to slow down and stop, was wrong. This shouldn't have happened to begin with, but I don't lower the rating more because Ash apologized and always made sure Lyle was alright from then on. It wasn't that Lyle didn't want to have sex with him, it was more like he needed a break to catch his breath and to process his feelings. I think I've only read one manhwa with safe words, but a safe word between Ash and Lyle would've made things so much better.
My other issue with the story is the amount of filler chapters. Not because I didn't like them. They were adorable, but how can you give me a good ending and then have 30 more chapters? I was so scared something was going to go terribly wrong, because 30 chapters is a lot! But fortunately everything was fluff and spice with a few minor conflicts here and there. Nothing to worry about.
