Before picking up this book, I had read both positive and negative reviews which helped me manage my expectations. I didn’t end up hating this book, but I didn’t love it either. It was just meh.
I could not connect with the characters and I was not invested in the romance. Sam and Xavier had no chemistry and their conversations were so dry. I was indifferent to them and didn’t even care if they ended up together, which in a romance book, is a pretty big issue. Their relationship developed way too fast and it didn’t make sense to me how quickly they became obsessed with each other.
There were also some genuinely funny moments and then there were moments where I thought the author was trying too hard to make things funny. I mean she would use the same jokes multiple times and so they just lost their charm. It happened more often in the first half, but the author dialled it down for the rest of the book. I don’t even want to get into the whole thing with the dad.
What did I like then? I liked how caring and attentive Xavier was. He was a sweet boyfriend. I also adored Xavier’s friends. They were so wholesome and supportive and I wished they were in the book more. Also, Tristan. He was the only person thinking and speaking clearly about the situation with his dad.
Overall, this was an okay read. Not my favourite of hers.

Yes!! Everything moved so fast that when Xavier was saying and doing all this cute stuff, I didn't feel it all because it wasn't believable or realistic. It didn't hit at all. And I'm so upset about the dad thing and how everyone was basically gaslighting poor Tristan when he was just speaking facts. ugh like why?!

Thank you bestie! I'm really enjoying passion project and am obsessed with Henry!! but I'm close to the third act conflict and I'm worried if it will make me rethink my rating like it did for you :(
