Possibly it鈥檚 not so surprising when a more-than-slightly fanatical working-class autodidact rewrites the Old Testament in order to put back all the sex that the original author left out. That it then astonishes, infuriates, bores and nauseates in jarring alternating spasms is completely expected. That Ken Russell made a movie of it was likewise predictable; but that his movie was a model of good taste was a great disappointment 鈥 come on, Ken, where were the tits and bums and the giant plastic phalluses and the naked nuns? DH Lawrence was a unique novelist. If he鈥檇 never existed we really wouldn鈥檛 have had to invent him. I鈥檓 thinking that now he鈥檚 subsided entirely into Eng Lit courses where he lurks like a half submerged lamprey, luring the innocent with his new-aginess and biting their soft parts with his fascism. You should probably read one DHL novel and this is probably the one. Certainly not The Rainbow! Are you kidding?

Julio Genao Mmm. Just what the doctor ordered: a new PB review with which to begin the day in style.

message 2: by Sue (new)

Sue Smith I think your user name should be PBRYANT666 as you are a wee bit devilish!

Thanks for the laugh!

message 3: by Manny (new)

Manny Do you know, until this moment it had never occurred to me that sex might have been left out of the Old Testament. But maybe you're right.

Who is Glenda Jackson?

message 4: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant Glanda Jackson plays the Acid Queen in Ken Russell's restrained version of Tommy... I think.

message 5: by Manny (new)

Manny By Tommy, I assume you mean the Gospel of Saint Thomas?

message 6: by Kirk (new)

Kirk Hey, I loved the movie! And to be fair, it does have Alan Bates and Oliver Reed wrestling nude*, surely that counts for something. Besides, one can't do Lair of the White Worm every time out. It's up there with The Devils for me in Russell's oevre.

(*Women in Love, that is, not Tommy; Tommy has Ann- Margret wrestling with baked beans, fully clothed alas).

message 7: by Manny (new)

Manny Everyone always mentions Alan Bates and Oliver Reed wrestling nude, and no one ever mentions that Glenda Jackson appears topless. Well I'd like to make up for that right now.

message 8: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant Glenda Jackson in Dances with Cows

message 9: by Manny (new)

Manny Oh yes, the Dances with Cows scene! I'm forever blowing bubbles!

Not to mention Eating the Fig. There's so much in this movie!

message 10: by Paul (last edited Mar 19, 2013 03:03PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant I was going to post two contrasting GJ vids, but Utube let me down - the nude writhing in train carriage (Music Lovers 1970) and the stern lecturing of Tories (2010) but I could only find the second. As I recall, the first is priceless but frightening.

message 11: by Kirk (new)

Kirk and no one ever mentions that Glenda Jackson appears topless.

I'm at a loss that I don't even remember that. Well, it has been quite a number of years since I saw it..

message 12: by Paul (last edited Mar 19, 2013 03:42PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant she did a few nude scenes... for a brief while it was her and Helen Mirren duelling it out.

message 13: by Gary (new)

Gary the Bookworm Kirk wrote: "and no one ever mentions that Glenda Jackson appears topless.

It's probably a blessing that it's wiped from your memory. I wish I could rid myself of Lena Dunham's aggressive nudity.

message 14: by Emma (new)

Emma It's kind of a relief when one time must-read authors become passe. There is enough waiting to be read already.

Cecily ROFL. I just love this, especially the opening sentence of the generated review.

message 16: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant they improved the GR autoreview program now so that it includes 6 gifs and 3 nearly naked men per review. It guarantees at least 150 votes.

Cecily Bleurgh!

Lance Polin This is a wonderful review, even if I don't entirely agree with it. Nice job.

message 19: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant thank Lance

Cosmo Crawley Thanks for the review. I've just finished reading the novel and really needed a good laugh.

message 21: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant thanks Cosmo...

message 22: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Yeah, life's short and I have SO many other worthwhile works to read. I can cheerfully skip Lawrence without any regrets at not having added his name to a list of revered authors that I just HAD to devote time to. And I run across others now and then - sure wish I had a handy autoreview function to handle those, too!

message 23: by Susan (new)

Susan I keep putting this on my list and every time I pick it up, I make it 50 or so pages and then am all, 鈥淣ahhh....鈥 I did make it through Lady Chatterly鈥檚 Lover, though, so yay me.

message 24: by selma (new) - rated it 1 star

selma Paul, i see you took your one-star back. What did he do to deserve this?

message 25: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant Our bracing conversation about this unmasterpiece finally bore fruit when today I woke up with one thought in my mind - "I must remove the second star from Women in Love! Of course! Why have I delayed so long?"

message 26: by Mwanamali (new)

Mwanamali Brilliant as ever you were Paul.

3.4/10 is very specific...

message 27: by Ann (new)

Ann Lmao

message 28: by JeLo (new)

JeLo Guevara Nice review as always. Eye-catching, artistic and full of wit. :D

message 29: by Beth (new)

Beth Hahahaha

message 30: by Susan (new)

Susan 'DH Lawrence was a unique novelist. If he鈥檇 never existed we really wouldn鈥檛 have had to invent him.' I salute you, Sir, for once again expressing my own thoughts far more articulately than I could ever hope to!

message 31: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant thanks everyone, and thank you DHL... I guess...

message 32: by Ray (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ray +1 for the last sentence, it brightened a dreary Monday morning.

message 33: by Cymru (new)

Cymru Roberts But where are the tartines 馃オ

message 34: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant that's a good idea, I think I will make one now....

message 35: by Cookie M. (new)

Cookie M. I'll have you know my granny was a big fan of D.H. Lawrence. She recommended "The Rainbow" to me, and I hope she is enjoying herself in hell.

message 36: by Bailey (new)

Bailey H. I'm literally just commenting because Paul is my favorite reviewer. I never actually read the books he reviews, I just read the reviews and the comments below as entertainment. PLZ PLZ respond this time Paul. It'd be pretty cool just saying. And yeah...I know I'm weird for a 15 yr old girl because instead of being on Snapchat 24/7 I'm on 欧宝娱乐 and Pinterest.

message 37: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant Hi Bailey - thanks for the kind words. I hope 欧宝娱乐 now has some kind of retrochic thing going.

message 38: by Bailey (new)

Bailey H. It kind of does. It's a sort of a haven for kids like me. It's a social platform yet safe for them to be their strangely wonderful selves without anyone but fellow reality escapers to judge them.

message 39: by Cassy (new)

Cassy Clever review!

Alexander Weber Couldn't agree more. I hated this book

message 41: by Cookie M. (new)

Cookie M. Bailey, I am am a strangely wonderful 65 year old woman, for whom 欧宝娱乐 is the only social media platform I feel comfortable on. I have deleted everything else.

message 42: by carol. (new)

carol. Can I get a copy of your review program? I have a few I don't feel up to tackling.

message 43: by Paul (new) - rated it 1 star

Paul Bryant I'm afraid the whole thing was scrapped after reviews of Mein Kampf and 50 Shades of Grey got somehow mixed up together. The results were hideous.

message 44: by Erica (new)

Erica So, in other words, your review of the book is more entertaining than the actual book...

message 45: by Cookie M. (new)

Cookie M. Erica, that is the case for most of his reviews. We are waiting for him to publish.

Kallie I feel exactly the same about your review of Women in Loves as I did for your review of The Rainbow:
What a shame so many people like your facetiously clever 'review' and probably don't bother to read the novel with any appreciation for context and what makes it a great, distinctive from every novel that preceded it. Congratulations. You must feel so proud.

Cecily Kallie wrote: "What a shame so many people like your facetiously clever 'review' and probably don't bother to read the novel with any appreciation for context and what makes it a great..."

Some of the people who've liked and commented on this clearly satirical review not only read the book, plus The Rainbow, but loved it and wrote their own enthusiastic, non-satirical reviews. (I am one, but not the only one.)

I liked the review. I have read the book. I liked it less. I am pleased that you enjoyed Women in Love more than I did. Each to their own.

Fergus, Weaver of Autistic Webs Paul鈥 ths review of yours is so absolutely phabtasmagorically fantabulously funny, that I split my sides. Amazingly enough, I AGREE with you!

Paul Bryant thanks Fergus.... that was a fun review to write....
