I hesitated reading this. Renewed it 3 times before reaching for it with trepidation. The ratings were tanking. Argh...
Was I going to have to burn it? The last 2 Heller’s were disasters IMO. Was this a last chance at redemption?

Two guys out on a hunt come to a town that has been decimated. They trudge on to find the same and find no one alive who can tell them what is happening. It’s apocalyptic. A secession is happening in Maine. Storey & Jess are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Heller does nature like no other. It was rather long-winded and a lot of reminiscing about childhood days. A solid bromance - best buddies. But that ending? It appears like someone burned my last few pages?! Which doesn’t leave a good taste in my mouth, Heller. Tastes rather ashy actually.

3.5⭐️ Better but I need and expect more from you, Heller.

Do check out The River for a superior read.

Jodi Oh, that's such a shame! But I'm with you on one thing, Jen. His earlier novelThe River—was really exceptional!! I wanted to read more after that, but all his newer books have been in the same vein as Burn, so no thanks.👎

message 2: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Long winded bromance? Not for me at all! Sorry this didn't work out, but fair review Jen, hope your next makes up for it! 🤞🤞

message 3: by Diane (new)

Diane Hope your next read is better!

Carmel Hanes My thoughts exactly. I was disappointed in this one.

message 5: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W While it's good that this book is an improvement on his last two, it was disappointing for you. I hope you find a 5 star read soon. I'm looking for one, myself! ;0)

message 6: by Dina (new)

Dina Natale I love your reviews.

message 7: by Rich (new)

Rich Nice review Jen!!! I have been on the fence about Heller for awhile, really liked the River but others haven’t sounded great....your review is not helping his cause...
Welcome back Hockey :)

He really was a talented writer. The Painter was also another great one. Oh well...as we say Jodi, C'est la Vie!

Sunflowerbooklover Fab review Jen!! Never read this author!!

message 17: by K (new)

K Long winded, plus a not-so-good ending, is definitely not up my literary alley. I have read The Dog Stars, which I liked a lot, but I haven't read The River. I appreciate your honest review and hope your next read is a 5-star one!

message 18: by Jayme (new)

Jayme Sorry this left a bad taste 👅 in your mouth! Hope you love your next!

Karen That damn ending!
Fab review, Jen!

Check out The River."

TY Jonas! That one is a heart pumping adrenaline rush!

Canadian Jen Bianca wrote: "Great review. You can't say you haven't given it a chance to impress you. I won't be rushing to read this."

Sadly, this may be the last between us, Bianca. His earlier reads are so much more.

Canadian Jen JaymeO wrote: "I took this one off my list a while ago. Sounds like I made the right choice! Sorry it didn’t work! Fantastic review!"

Likely, a good call. This isn't totally a bad one, but he needs to really rev things up. The talent was there but he may just have gotten caught on the assembly line of delivering stories. I hope he gets back to his basics. Thanks JaymeO!

Ѳٳ☶ I used to think I could never get enough of Heller. But now, with his more recent novels, I have to space them out. He's getting more paranoid with every book imo.

message 29: by Debra (new)

Debra Terrific review, Jen! Sorry it was not up to par with his earlier books.

message 30: by Tina (new)

Tina I guess even the best of them sometimes write a so-so novel. Too bad about that ending! Great review as usual Jen❣️

Canadian Jen Kendall wrote: "Fab review Jen!! Never read this author!!"

Stick to his earlier works, Kendall!

The Painter is good too, K.

Thanks much, Jayme!

Canadian Jen Karen wrote: "That damn ending!
Fab review, Jen!"

What was that, Karen?!?! Like is there a sequel coming? I'm not sure I would read it quite honestly. He needs to get more oomph with his storylines.

Canadian Jen Debbie wrote: "Sounds like this author struck out."

Not as badly as his previous last 2, Debbie.

Canadian Jen Suzy wrote: "Sorry this one didn’t work Jen! Great review! 💜"

TY Suzy!

Canadian Jen Kevin wrote: "2.5 more stars than I have it 😉"

Well.....lol...I think it was slightly better than his last 2 releases. But the ending sucked.

Canadian Jen Rosh wrote: "Long-winded writing bores me as well. Sorry this didn't live up to your expectations, Jen. Fair review!"

Thanks Rosh....I'm not sure I would give him another chance. He's spewing them out too quickly and they are the quality that they were.

Canadian Jen Ѳٳ☶ wrote: "I used to think I could never get enough of Heller. But now, with his more recent novels, I have to space them out. He's getting more paranoid with every book imo."

I agree, Martha. He's going to the extremes.....in the last 3.
