it was ok

unsure on if my bar for being scared by horror is extremely high or this book is another case of a thriller / horror being overhyped. the point of view was something i really enjoyed and i thought would bring the spooky factor into full affect with this book, when instead the author wrote the 8 year old like she was 4. meanwhile adults are having full on conversations with her like she is their co worker.

almost every adult in this book is a complete failure in so many ways, i didn’t find the ‘other mommy to be scary at all. it all became so repetitive and tired after 30%. i mean do we learn nothing.

the ending is a whole other thing, the last 20% is confusing in a horrible way and feels like we left so many plot holes and just started doing things that made zero sense. and it was extremely predictable after everything.

overall, the beginning and the point of view at first had me hooked for the first 35% after that we slowly (or i should actually say quickly) FELL AND ROLLED down hill.

Bee the parents in this book were problematic af

message 2: by Piper (new) - added it

Piper Brown I couldn’t even finished, I dnf’d

samantha lombardi sooooo agree I thought I was the only one who thought this book was so strange

message 4: by Helen (new)

Helen You should try reading House of Leaves. Lots of people say it’s the scariest thing they’ve ever read ( personally it wasn’t for me, but I still merits recognition)

Natasha I agree, it reminded me of a knock off of hidden pictures for some reason 😣

camille Omg I totally agree with everything you said

Sydney Agreed- I regret even finishing it or spending money on it. It was the one of the worst books I’ve ever read.

Marissa I agree @Natasha

message 9: by Amber (new)

Amber Pritt The ending was like a Netflix movie. I'm also so disappointed with a Netflix ending. Like we could have had that ending well before and saved me time!

Michelle Lol I literally said the same thing in my review... None of this made any sense, I almost DNF'd halfway through. So repetitive and messy

Natalie Farley Yes! That was the most unnatural dialogue ever! Every time the dad said “think about it this way… I rolled my eyes.

Jasmine Jackson Yes I had to relisten to the end again

Michelle Flerl Finally someone who didn't love & rave about this book. I dnf'd it at about the 30% mark. After all the wonderful reviews I kept seeing I began to wonder if I had a different copy.

Karen Schiltz I had the misfortune of listening to this on audible. A friend of mine was reading the Kindle at the same time. We both struggled so hard to finish it because neither of us like DNF. But honestly it was so boring and every time we would talk to each other about the fact that we still had so much more of the book to go it was SUCH A DRAG. So glad it wasn't just us!

message 15: by Sara (new)

Sara Completely agree that the girl reads as 4 instead of 8. I was listening to the audiobook until I just couldn't handle it anymore.

Deanna Escobar Agree with this review. Also…I seemed to have missed where she actually calls the spirit “Other Mommy”.? Overhyped…At least it only took 40 minutes to read.

message 17: by Bree (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bree Aguiar Wait she is 8?!?!

Mihaela Lazar I couldn’t have said it better myself. Your review is 100% spot on. So disappointing for such a hyped up book.

message 19: by j. (new) - rated it 3 stars

j. Author could’ve just lied and said Bela was a 4 year-old kid instead because NO WAY that’s what an 8 year-old talks like in his head

Janine Leffler I am only on chapter 12 and I can wholeheartedly say that i agree with you Destiny

Ethan Stennett I felt the same way and the ending meh 🤷🏽‍♂

Albert I was so excited to read this, what a complete disappointment, I never connected with the characters and really didn't care what happened to them, and the ending was just ridiculous.

message 23: by Jen (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jen Sands I felt like someone was trying to re-write Coraline. *Yawn*

message 24: by Coco (new) - rated it 1 star

Coco Cervantes She was 8?!?! I never I thought she was like five

message 25: by Kim (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kim Hensley She was 8? No way. I agree the beginning was good and then it skidded off the rails.

message 26: by Princess (new) - added it

Princess Nguta Des, I gotta give it to you, your thoughts on this books is just spot on. I thought I would be scared but oh well, didnt happen at all. Thank you for putting your review out there!

Ashley I 100% agree with your review. I feel
The same way about this book

message 28: by Tina (new) - rated it 2 stars

Tina The ending was horrible. I had been hearing so much about this book, so i kept reading waiting for it to get better. I hoped the ending would bring it around. I was wrong.

Jaime Definitely thought the child was maybe 5 lol! This just made the book more annoying to me. I should have DNF’ed it.

James Etheridge Agree entirely! They ran all over the map, met several completely pointless people, revealed all of their adult BS to their kid for some stupid reason, and then ended up dead with a possessed child as if they did nothing at all.

message 31: by Amy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amy White Mizell I didn't like the mother, Ursula, and I kept waiting for something big to happen...it never did.

message 32: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah Banks This is exactly how I felt, god this was such a horrible book. I fully believe that people just liked it because its josh malerman, and had zero critical thought as they read this. I should have DNF'd, such a waste of time.

Ashley When I first started I had such high hopes. But towards the middle it started getting bad and the ending was awful 🙁 I feel like authors just don’t know how to finish books anymore

Federica can i tattoo your review on my whole body? cause it’s 100% relatable

emilie ann OKAY THANK YOU!!

Laura SHE'S EIGHT?! I figured she was five at the oldest

Shannon Prano Completely agree with all of this. Between the formatting (which in retrospect I should’ve taken the note that it was intentional as a sign to turn back), trying to figure out how old this kid was meant to be, and being bothered by places that aren’t real and give no indication of where in Mi hogan they might be, and phrases (referring to locations here) I’ve never heard a person in this state use and Ive been here my whole 51 years, I was too annoyed and confused to be frightened.

Danielle D I had no bar for a horror book since this was my first and I felt the same. It was a dud.

message 39: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Jordan She was supposed to be 8??

Natalie Stanton Also the big family secret that was supposed to ruin her innocence didn’t seem that deep to me. Sure to an 8 year old that’s life changing and I understand that. However it lead me to believe it was going to be something much darker or that would explain some sort of origin for other mommy.

message 41: by Sue (new) - rated it 2 stars

Sue Ardila 100 percent agree w/all points...the mother was insufferable & the dad was a doormat, this not horror either more like suspense?

Lauren Koshak This this this

message 43: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura i haven't read this but i need you to know that "the author wrote the 8 year old like she was 4. meanwhile adults are having full on conversations with her like she is their co worker. " absolutely sent me😂

Rebecca Grace Complete waste of money and time for me, too. I should’ve known after hearing what a dud Bird Box was.

message 45: by Dani (new)

Dani I’m only about 54% done with the audiobook and the child’s voice is grating my nerves so bad. I’m not sure I can finish lol. The adults are insufferable and the way they treat the kid like she’s just another adult…awfullllllll. I’ll be so glad to return this book asap. Ugh.

message 46: by Adam (new)

Adam Renfrow I just started this book, and I'm on page 10, and I think I'm gonna skip it. Horrible.

Rachel Jackson I agree with you 💯

message 48: by R (new) - rated it 1 star

R I agree. In the middle I felt like I don't really care about this kid or adults anymore. Can she be posessed now, so we can get over with it lol

message 49: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna Kozal I AGREE ABOUT THE KID?? The entire time I couldn’t figure out if she’s 4 or 10. Ugh! Could barely get through it

Jabston75 Abston Agreed.
