did not like it

Ця книжка виявилась романтизацією всього російського я ригаю

My comment suddenly became a popular one, so I feel like I need to explain.

This is literally a romanticization of russian culture. It's clear as day that the author wanted to write about russians and love all russian very much. She could have at least hidden it and written about the astronauts' home countries equally. But she talks like 20% of the time about other nations and 80% about russia. And she knows so many details about that fucking country and how they live, how they speak. And to write this in 2024 when russia is committing literal genocide and killing civilians every day is completely tone-deaf. The lives of the people of an East-European country don't have a lot of value for the Westerns, huh?

Aside from that the book itself is not good. The sentences are short and repetitive. No plot at all. The characters are literally the same. They don't have personalities except some longing for the countries where they were born. It's definitely not science fiction as the author is too uneducated on space and space travel. The author didn't learn geography at school and it shows. And it's definitely just a bad fiction.

кайнда нічого не втрачаєш, книжка дуже посередня, ні фікшн, ні нон-фікшн, на есе теж не тягне... просто вайби космосу

Kate Borysenko

Erik Smith This book does not celebrate Russia.

Marion Brownlee Get a grip. This book does not celebrate Russia. It is an awesome book in its own right. It has nothing to do with the Ukraine Russia tragedy

Ad Mu It seems like you wish that the Russian nation was the subject of genocide instead. Russian culture has existed for centuries before the 2022 war, and it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future,

Yulia Malysh Don’t shame yourself with your bad education. Your comment just shows how poor is your knowledge and how empty is your brain that you allowed to fill it with propaganda instead of studying the true history

Gaston Dorren How embarrassingly stupid.

message 11: by Josh (new) - rated it 4 stars

Josh Incorrect. It has one Russian character and talks to them just as much or little as the other characters. Get a grip.

Bella (Kiki) I think there are two Russian cosmonauts, but I don't think it matters. Harvey spends time with the astronauts, too. I didn't like the book, other than the lovely prose, but I also don't think it seemed Harvey showed any preference for Russia.

Helen Grant As a non Russian I honestly can’t think of a single thing she talks about much relating to Russia except that they aren’t allowed to share the toilet (but the astronauts ignore their government and do anyway) and that the Russian section of the ISS is falling apart. Neither are particularly positive things in my opinion.

Vadym Щойно прочитав це лайно заради інтересу. Авторка книги дійсно русофіл.

ܻě Čertík Have you actually read the book?

message 16: by Kay (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kay The only thing said about Russia in this book is that the Russian cosmonauts aren't allowed to piss in the other toilets and their section of the ISS isn't maintained very well. The two (2) Russian characters (who are there to mirror the real-life presence of Russian scientists in space) are treated the same as the American, Italian, and Japanese characters.

Bob Marshall Weird - did you read the book ?

message 18: by Christopher (new) - added it

Christopher Dunne There's not much about Russia in the book. Oh, yeah, two of the characters are Russian cosmonauts.

Tamara Saridou Genuine question, dear Anna: How do you contribute to your fellow Ukrainians beyond being loud on social media? What have you done recently to support your people and their cause?

message 20: by Danny (new) - added it

Danny Fowles I actually don't think you read this book.

Ingrid Are all these weird reviews about Russia from bots? They are all wildly wrong about how much the book focuses on it. Harvey deep dives about each character and their homeland. People happen to be from Russia. A people is not their government.

Paul It’s funny when people hate books they haven’t read.
