I’ll inhabit any world Richard Osman dreams up. Like Osman, I enjoy a great plot with plucky seniors. Osman writes the senior roll well. He knows society underestimates seniors; they are largely invisible. Thus, when an “invisible senior provides an unexpected witty retort or out-foxes the reader, we are unexpectedly delighted. After achieving notable success with his “The Thursday Murder Club series, Osman decided he could create a new world of age-advanced sleuths entitled “We Solve Murders.
One of my favorite bits of his plot line is having a supervillain as the center cog of his storyline. Who doesn’t love a supervillain? Osman is current and “relevant so his supervillain makes clever uses out of ChatGPT. He’ll say, “make me write like I’m a British gentleman, or make me sound like an American film producer to his computer as he writes emails, etc. It’s very clever. He’s a busy man, he doesn’t have time to personally disguise all his writings.
To the basic plot, Amy Wheeler works as a bodyguard for an agency called “Maximum Impact Solutions. Her father-in-law Steve is a retired London cop, a lonely widower who lives with his cat, Trouble. Amy and Steve talk often, about nothing. Currently Amy is a bodyguard to an uber successful crime-writer, Rosie D’Antonio. Ms. D-Antonio wrote a book which displeased a Russian oligarch. Curiously, one of Amy’s ex-clients is killed. And then another! It appears that someone is trying to frame Amy for the killings, but she doesn’t know who nor why. So, she calls lonely Steve. Rosie overhears the conversation and wants in on the action. Rosie is one delightful character. With Rosie’s wealth and access to a private jet, Amy, Steve and Rosie take the reader on a ride that only Osman can dream-up.
The banter is clever, witty and nonstop. I highly recommend it for a clever, cozy mystery. I listened to the audio, narrated perfectly by Nicola Walker. It’s 10 ½ hours long.
