it was amazing
bookshelves: learning-to-listen

Essential reading, particularly as the war against the Trans community continues to worsen, and even more particularly for white, cis, het boring old privileged English men like me who really need to get the fuck out of our own narrow bubbles and spend more time listening to voices that should be amplified as loudly as bloody possible.

So yeah. This is excellent and funny and sad and interesting and intelligent and I loved it.

Tom LA I thought this whole thing was finally getting quieter, as society is having a collective rebellion against men in women’s bathrooms and in women’s sports? Big contributor to the fact that the political left has been on a losing streak in many Western countries. Gender is not fluid why listen to science when it comes to climate change, but not when it comes to gender?

Jonathan Yawn. I am only bothering to respond because I am bored waiting at the drs. I am ignoring the most egregious idiocies in your comment, as well as the deliberate insults in your wording and language, but on the science front, maybe you should actually know something about the clear and incontrovertible evidence that sex is anything but binary before you spout off on things. More importantly, however, what was the point in your comment on a book review website for a book written by a trans author? Are you trying to start an argument for your own enjoyment? Trying to feel superior? Anyway.Piss off.

Michael B. I am not so naive to believe that if we just all go away, or stay silent, that we will be saved from the wrath of bigots. I appreciate your review of this book and the perspective you brought to it, precisely because I recognize we may be entering a new dark age where our silence will be mandated. I am currently reading a book that takes place in Spain during the Franco regime when fascist thought was so prevalent that many believed remaining silent was preferable to making waves. It is good to familiarize ourselves with such literature so that we may be better prepared when fascism becomes fashionable again, otherwise the culture of authoritarianism can silence a generation, and hurt many others in the process. We do not go silent into that night. Read on. Thank you.

Tom LA That’s right, Michael: I fully agree with your point! I won’t be silenced by a quasi-fascist ideology that prohibits me from saying the obvious: a man is not a woman.

Jonathan Hey genius! Guess what, you are actually right (though not with respect to the words "fascist" and "ideology", neither of which you seem to understand). A "man" is not a "woman". That is why they are different terms.

However, a Trans Man is a Man and a Trans Woman is a Woman.

But, hey, you do you buddy. Keep raging against that all-powerful trans lobby that seeks to silence you (are they the ones with space lasers? I can never remember....)

Michael B. They say that reading helps us to build empathy for those who may be different from us. I occasionally find reason to doubt if this is necessarily true in all cases.
