it was amazing
bookshelves: 20th-century, fiction, uk, audio

Absolutely loved this book about the English aristocracy and the ambitious young woman who tries to marry into it, all told from the ironic perspective of a nameless actor who is everyone's confidante.

I went back to look, and this is only the third book I've awarded 5 stars to this year (out of 180 or so). Not a great year.

Deb I've read this book! And liked it. Written by "Kilwillie" from Monarch of the Glen....Quite a prolific screenwriter, too.

Karen I started reading this in Barnes & Noble but didn't buy it as I felt guilty about all of the "to be read" books on my shelf. I'm glad to hear it lives up to the promise I found in the first few pages! Will have to add it to my list. I assume that Fellowes does the audiobook himself?

CLM No, but the narrator is excellent. I don't remember Fellowes from Monarch but perhaps only saw season 1 and part of 2. I own a few so will catch up at some point, but it is hard to make time for DVDs.

Deb Kilwillie was the fat pink neighboring laird who played war games with the Richard Briers character. BTW, I got the book from ILL and it was nothing like the series, and not worth bothering with IMNSHO.
