it was amazing
bookshelves: nonfiction, children

I recall my teacher reading this to the class in 1986 I believe. As a child I found it hilarious and highly entertaining, and as an adult I wholeheartedly agree. The archaic practices of corporal punishment in schools and barbaric medical treatments and care were horrifying. We don’t know how good we have it! The author was a little full of himself and his achievements, but considering his lifelong phenomenal success he had earned the right.

Krystal My children absolutely loved his books when they were younger. I remember reading The Witches aloud to them. Love this review!!!💞💞

Em I really enjoyed all of the books by him I read as a child too. Of course, retrospectively now that I'm aware of his raging antisemitism, it casts everything in a different light. But I truly try to separate the works from the author in my mind--not just for him but in general. I think great art can be created by horrible people. So I don't dismiss his books. It's different when the author is still alive and profiting--then the question becomes whether or not one wants to contribute to a horrible person's income. But historical figures like this...I try to keep their work separate in my mind. (Sorry that was longer winded than I expected)

Thanks so much, Krystal. All his books were so popular when I was a child. I loved the, because they were so wicked. 💚

I know exactly what you are saying. I try to think that way too, and my reasoning is - why should I punish myself? But I still feel torn.
