Midnight Tides (Malazan Book of the Fallen, #5)

This book was nothing short of brilliant! So much so that it is, at this point, my favorite Malazan installment which is all the more surprising since there is only one recurring main character from the previous books. It is also set in that character‘s past we know what happens to Trull Sengar in book 4. It turns out knowing what the future has in store for him only made this book even more intriguing.
This book introduces us to two sets of brothers, the Beddicts and the Sengals. My absolute favorite was Tehol Beddict and his manservant Bugg; they are such a hilarious pair. Erikson is so good at creating these comic relief scenes, comic relief that is needed. Tehol mostly pretends to be obtuse, while Bugg patiently humors him. It just works so well.
But his pretend stupidity and apparent poverty hide what an economic genius he is. His brother Brys is equally competent but his talent lies in swordsmanship. Finally, there is Hull Beddict, who is plagued by the knowledge that his role as an explorer of the tribes along Lether‘s borders was ultimately used to subjugate and eradicate these cultures. His allegiance therefore lies with the Tiste Edur, who have not been conquered.
It is with this people where we encounter our second set of brothers, this time a set of four. Among them is, most notably, Trull Sengar, one of our PoV characters, a genuinely good and intelligent guy, whose ultimate fate we know from House of Chains, which is not alluded to here, however. Fear Sengar, the eldest brother, is likewise a man of integrity; Binadas Sengar is close with Hull Beddict, and Rhulad‘s arrogance and craving for validation is one of the catalysts for a war between the Tiste Edur and the human Letherii. In his defense, there is magic involved and the will and direction of gods and other magical creatures. Needless to say magic again plays a large role; as much as I usually struggle with soft magic systems, I had no trouble with it here at all. Maybe I‘m just used to it by now or maybe it just fits into the narrative so well.
Another PoV character is the Letherii slave Udinaas, who impacts events considerably, but I‘ll leave it at that it’s best to find out for yourself. I will say he is not among my favorite characters.
If you find yourself asking, where are the women in all this? Do not worry, there are both main and minor female characters. One of them is Shuq Ellale, an undead thief, who wants to get a makeover to be pretty again; she is always good for a laugh. Seren Pedac is one of only seven Acquitors allowed in the Tiste Edur territory as designated by treaty. We will also see events unfold through her eyes.
So, here we are. A 1000-page book that flew by. I‘m not sure why this is my favorite installment so far; possibly because of our characters and their respective paths, possibly because of that devastating yet satisfying ending. But also because in this book you get it all: political intrigue, manipulation, gods, magical creatures, love, lust, hilarity, monstrosity, war, cruelty, friendship and loyalty.
I‘m so grateful I stayed with this series even if it was not always easy. It was well worth it!

“What do you want we should eat tonight?
“Something that needs cooking.
“Would that be something better when cooked, or something that has to be cooked?
“Either way’s fine.
“How about wood?
“I’m not eating"
“For the hearth.

Oh, I'm actually loving it so far! Book 4 was a disappointment to me and I was wary going into this as it had only few recurring characters, but it turns out, that's actually not an issue. Love all these brothers! Tehol is my favorite so far; he is just hilarious. I'm excited to continue. 😊

😂 The first book throws you into the deep end off the pool but it's really worth the near drowning sensation. I hope you do decide to pick it up. 😊

You know, just the other day I thought about what I would say if someone asked me what Stormlight or Malazan was about - I'd honestly have no clue. 😂 If you do decide to get started, I was using summaries on Tor's website while reading, which helped me a lot. But that's not everybody's thing. I wrote a review on Gardens of the Moon so maybe you could check that one out if you're interested in a few tips.

Very meticulous review on Gardens, btw. Love it. Maybe I’ll manage to squeeze this series in next year. 😄

I'm glad you like the Tor chapter re-reads and I hope they'll help you as they did me - once you get to them in 2025.😉

I really did. I loved it. Thank you, Paulette! 💕

Thank you very much, JJ! 💕 It really is a great series.

Not sure what you've heard but just know that it's worth all the confusion you're likely to feel in the early books. If you want, check out my review on Gardens of the Moon - I give some more advice there. Happy reading, John!

PS: Can we also talk about that cover! It's strikingly beautiful.

Thank you so much, Elisa! I hope you had a happy Christmas. 😊 Happy New Year to you too. May it be filled with excellent books. 💕

Thank you, Karin! Oh, you're going to love this one. 😊 Did you already read House off Chains? Happy New Year, my friend. 😊

Charlie Chaplin is so right - great quotation, Chris! Erikson is excellent at making you smile but he is equally excellent at creating horrific moments. Oh, there are always many "monsters" in his books, both literally and figuratively. If you're interested, check out the K'chain Che'malle - one creature among many. I can't wait to see you dive into this series. 😊 And yes, the cover is great!

P.S. A Happy New Year to you Anna, and it's lovely to see you back ❤️

Thank you so much, Vashali! 😊 Yes, you are so right - the payoff was definitely worth it. I enjoyed the previous books as well, but especially book 4 was the weakest of them all, which is why I was even more delighted by this book. I had not expected that level of brilliance at all.
Happy New Year to you too, my friend! It's always a joy to see you back here. 💕 May you enjoy many great reads in good health. 🤞

Thank you, Nathan! I hope you'll love it when you do.

Thank you, Raquel! Yes, you absolutely should. 😊 It's intense and complex, that's for sure, but it is also brilliant. I hope you'll love it too!

Thank you, hon! 💕 Being terrified to start this is the appropriate sentiment - I was too. 😂 It really is an epic undertaking, but it's so worth it; Erikson is a genius. So take that first step on that admittedly long journey. I'm sure you'll be awed as well. 😊
