Someone I Loved (Je l'aimais)

Yes, a love story. In this French translation, a young wife has just found out that her husband has packed his bags and left her and their two daughters for another woman. Shocked, she travels with her (soon-to-be ex-) father-in-law to a family vacation cabin to recover. The father-in-law has always been stern, judgmental and non-communicative with her.
At the cabin we hear a wonderful love story but it’s not the one we would have expected.

I enjoyed the author’s refreshing style of writing which I think has evolved over time. I also enjoyed and reviewed two novellas by her in a book titled Life, Only Better.
The author's style seems to have changed from Someone, her first book published in 2002, to a much more 'in your face style.' The examples that follow are from Life Only Better in 2014:
“That shut you up. And “Come at me, losers. And “Get comfortable and have a seat. And “I’m warning you I’m going to finish this story. And how about this: ‘That which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger is complete crap. That which doesn’t kill you, doesn’t kill you. Period.

The author (b. 1970) has written about a dozen novels and sold millions of copies in French and in translation. On GR her best-known work is Hunting and Gathering and it's also her most highly-rated book. (4.12 which is fairy high.)

Yes an easy read, no heavy stuff, other than sad stories
