really liked it

Oh my goodness. I generally cringe when narrators are children, but in this case, it worked really well. Seeing the world through Christopher's eyes was illuminating. This poor child. The world is so very confusing to him. But I have so much confidence in this young man, and I'm sure he'll accomplish all he wants, even with all the barriers he'll have to face (the world isn't exactly designed for his accessibility needs, after all). I'm hopeful he'll make lots of friends, find people who are kind wherever he goes, and solves great scientific mysteries.

Mark Porton Great review Hannah - I always cringe when kids are narrators!

Vanessa Spot-on review, Hannah! I enjoyed this book when I first read it and I *think* I still have a copy somewhere on these shelves. Maybe I should do a re-read.

After reading this one, Mark, I think children must be at least 15 years old before I'll read books with their voices as the primary narrators. Anything younger, and the story is too unreliable and whiny. Christopher, in this case, was really charming. Reminded me a lot of Ameilia Bedelia, who was probably neurodivergent too.

Easy read, Vanessa, right? Story goes by pretty quickly, and the book is fairly short on its own. I think this goes on the read-when-I-need-a-feel-good shelf 😉

Richard FYI, the author was able to depict Christopher so skillfully becasue he had worked with such kids in an institution for a number of years before writing the novel. The trip to London was harrowing, wasn’t it?!? A heartwarming testament to a resilience and determination!

I didn't know that, Richard, but that makes a lot of sense. I'll be recommending the book to a friend who works for a similar place that cares for autistic youth. Thanks for that tidbit.

Fiza Pathan A fantastic review Hannah! Glad you enjoyed this one & rewarded it 4 stars. I can make out from your review that you were quite captivated by the protagonist & the case he had to solve regarding a deceased canine friend. I read it for the first time in the year 2005 when I just passed out of high-school & I loved it. The ending made me squirm & want to weep, I would never have thought back then that the dad had something to do with it - I was quite slow at mysteries back then. Hope your next one by Haddon is a winner! Happy Reading to you this Christmas! Merry Christmas in advance to you & yours! :)

I was definitely a late comer to this book. I'd never heard of it until someone here recommended it after I reviewed Look Me in the Eye. So glad for that rec. This was such a great book!

Merry Christmas to you! (should you celebrate it).

Of course I do, I am a Roman Catholic Nun - it is my husband's birthday so I definitely celebrate it! I'm a Benedictine Consecrated Virgin for Christ. A very Happy Christmas to you Hannah! May you discover more exciting Haddon reads in the year 2025! :)
