I was recommended this book by a friend and I had seen so much hype about it on my Tumblr dashboard that I finally gave in. Now let me start by saying two things. I honestly wanted to like this. I had seen mixed reviews, but I still decided that I wanted to like it.

I did find out all about the drama-filled history this particular author has. While I agree with the evidence, I've seen that doesn't have any weight on how I felt about this book.

That being that it was nothing more than a decent idea sloppily pasted together with similes and outfit descriptions.

If Clare had spent half as much time focusing on world building as she did constantly describing the golden, amber, halo, lion sex beauty that was Jace Jonathan Christopher Morgensten Wayland, then she might have had something here.

Instead, she just seemed to throw out terms from her world giving them no real life or connection. Like Clave, Accords, Covenant, and Shadow-Hunter. I can honestly say I'm not one hundred percent sure what any of those are or do.

Like is the Clave a governing body? It seems like that when anyone states that the Clave will be angry about this, that, or the other. But then a few times I noted that Jace claimed to be one of the Clave. So is the Clave their ruling body, is it another word for Shadow-hunters? Or is it just a word that we'll throw in anytime we want something to sound good an official? I really don't know.

The Covenant is brought up a few times in regards to their relationship with Down-worlders. In that doing x or y would go against the Covenant. I thought what they could and couldn't do to each other were the Accords. Is it two words for the same thing? Is there a difference?

As for Shadow-hunters themselves we don't even really get a clear picture of what makes a shadow-hunter a shadow-hunter. Sometimes it's being born that way with the special blood, but also then training, and runes, but then the cup can be used to make more shadow-hunters but only certain people. Again this is never really made clear and would have been more interesting to elaborate on than the amber fleck in Jace's honey golden eyes.

And another thing. If their duty, I assume, is to protect humanity and the human world why do they appear to regard humans (mundanes) as lesser creatures? Parts of the book they're pouting about the fact that the number of shadow-hunters is dwindling, but yet they have a law against marrying mundanes? Why not make repopulate with mundanes? At one point, they were still assuming that either Clary's father or mother was a mundane but she still had special shadow-hunter DNA because "Clave blood is dominant." (Again what the heck is the Clave then?)

All and all the consistency was sloppy, the world building wasn't well thought out for the enormous potential it had, and the characters fell flat. 90% of the characters in this book only had one setting and that was banter and snark. No matter how dire or emotional the situation the auto-response was sarcasm and snark. It grew tiresome. I want to see characters grow and react not just throw out "funny" lines.

Now I know a lot of people seem to love and enjoy these books. I can tell by the reviews alone. So I'm just going to reiterate that this is my opinion. I don't wish to bicker or fight with anyone about it. Just keep on enjoying it my review shouldn't take any of that from you.

This really could be better.

Andre Trust me, everything you stated will be going on later as well. In fact in her published Codex, aka the "guide", they say every Shadowhunter from 18 onwards is part of the Clave.
And Clare will even forget what she wrote in this book for the next. And be lucky you didn't need to read her lip-service regarding feminism, LGBT rights, history and pretty much everything across the board.

Btw. did you read the original or the movie-tie in version?

Roderick My oh my, I've been there too, do you plan to read the others?

Amanda @Andre - Yeah I know, I finished the Codex about a week ago. Since I read this book back in 2013 and planned on reading the last one I figured it was time for a quick re-read and mostly because I wanted to see just how much the codex contradicted the books themselves. The whole stupid mess with the definition of the Clave irritated me to the point of caps lock fixation.

I read it originally before the movie came out, I think or right before, so I read the original version.

@J - I have already didn't really get any better. I think majority of it is made up as it goes along.

Sorry, I forgot.
Well you know then how much it contradicts the books and itself.

And if you think TBC was messed up regarding hisory, I read a delete scene for Clockwork Angel where Jem tells Tessa about the attack on the Imperial Gardens and boy, if anyone said that in history class you would accuse them of revisionist history.

Amanda Speaking of TID I'm still baffled as to why so many people claim to love that series but dislike this one. Not to say this one is great I just seem to find TID more irritating I suppose.

Similar with me. I honestly cannot remember being as annoyed and sometimes infuriated with TMI as I was with TID. Or maybe that is because I read all of TMI except for number 6 before TID and so I simply do not remember anymore.
However TID seemed to be even more plothole ridden and full of even more hollow lip-service than TMI was. Heck Clare even claimed TID is feminist, which is about as much true as After Earth was a well-paced action adventure about father-son bonding.
Not to mention it showed how much Clare messes up history and any culture not her own.
