The Queen of Sugar Hill: A Novel of Hattie McDaniel―The Untold Story of Hattie McDaniel's Life and Legacy

This book introduces to some and educate others about the life of Hattie McDaniel, the first black woman to win an Oscar for her role of Mammy in Gone With The Wind. It focuses on her friendships (including Clark Gable, Dorothy Dandridge and Louise Beavers), failed marriages, racism, criticism from the NAACP and her attempted suicide.
Personal struggles aside, she continued to fight for the actors and crew that followed behind her. Often referred to as the Queen of Sugar Hill (named after the prominent black neighbor in Harlem), Hattie’s parties were infamous. Several actors refused to attend, until they found out her good friend Clark Gable often attended.
There was so much that I learned while reading this book. I lost plenty of sleep in fear of missing something. I’ve read plenty of books by @reshonda_tate, but this by far is her best work yet.
