I had no idea what to expect from this one, but a few chapters in, I realised that this was the backstory prior to Dorothy's visit in the Wizard of OZ!!! More essentially it is the backstory of the 'Wicked Witch of the West', as a mature audience re-imagining of Oz and its well known and loved characters from Oz himself to the Munchkins. And lo and behold this was a slam dunk re-imagination that blew my mind!
I really enjoyed reading this, far far more than the original series. On so many levels this is superior, from the family dynamics to the reality's politics. Three quarters into the book I wanted Dorothy and Toto to get wacked :D Easily the best fantasy long-form storytelling re-imagination I have ever read. A rarity for me, but I recommend everyone reads this one. A very firm Four Star, 8 out of 12 read.

The movie was such a pleasantly good surprise for me this year, as well, Baba, with 'Defying Gravity' being a highlight of a good song. So I'm glad the book was just as enjoyable an experience, too, fab review! ☺️

I learnt about this book only when the movie came out last year. I'm willing to try the book, though I'm not too interested in watching the adaptation. Glad you had fun with this, Baba. Nice review. :)

I loved the musical and yes I enjoyed it way more than Wizard of Oz where I just felt cheated and let down.
