Unfortunately, i find myself on a desolate outlier island. With multiple shifts in narrators and timelines, I struggled to keep my head above water. The novel succeeds at being deeply introspective and highly atmospheric, but I didn’t attach to any of the characters.

Fans of climate change novels will probably enjoy this novel more than I did. I knew it was going to be a cautionary tale, but my mindset wasn’t prepared for the overall icy bleakness.

I was gifted the audiobook in exchange for my honest review. While I listen to a lot of audiobooks, this is one where I wish I had a copy of the ebook as well. Several times, I found myself confused, and if I could have pulled up a character by name or a previous scene, it would have added clarity to my reading experience.

Julie Thole Could not agree more!

Belle Wendy! I’m sorry it didn’t go well for you. I can’t figure out how to be an audio person because I can’t focus too well that way. I guess I thought the tension, the mystery/thrill and the unreliability of each of the narrators pulled me straight in and held me.

Jill Agree!

K i struggled to finish. the characters were not authentic for me.

Holly B (slower pace!) Something was just off for me! Joining you on the island 🏝

Deana ❤️’s Reading I'm on the island with you. My worst read of 2025

Andrea Poulakis I agree with you completely. Characters not developed enough and very slow paced. I didn’t want to finish but did to see if got better. The ending was better than the whole book.

Sarah I agree, Wendy. I did like it better than you did, but I also struggled to connect to the characters, even though I have had no trouble with that in McConaghy's previous books. I can imagine it was difficult to keep track of who was who in the audio version. That was easy enough with the e-book, but I still feel like they weren't fully fleshed out.
