it was amazing
bookshelves: antartica, mystery, favorites

This is the first book I have read by Charlotte McConaghy, but her other books are on my horizon to read. I don’t know how I missed them.
This is a beautifully written thought provoking novel. It is the story of a family living on an isolated island near Antarctica. They are the only inhabitants of this island. Previously many scientists were there doing research. They have left the island because of the rising sea. The island holds the world’s largest seed bank.
The climate is changing. The sea is rising. There will be nothing left of this island.
The Salt family is there to pack up the seeds before they get destroyed.
A storm comes to the island washing ashore a woman who was trying to get to the island by boat. Why would she come to this island? The mystery begins.
I was immediately immersed in this story. The descriptions of the island and all its wildlife were breathtaking. You feel the isolation of the family. Dominic Salt and his three children lived there for 8 years. Now where will they go and can adept to a new environment?
I learned so much from this book about seeds, plants and wild life.
This is a compelling story. Do not miss it.

Canadian Jen It was wonderful! I just finished this yesterday. I do highly recommend Migrations as well, Maureen. She has a talent for educating at the same time telling a story. Great review!
