it was ok

Call me crazy, but Twilight wasn't that bad. Well, sure, it's bad, but it's not 1-star bad. The sequels were atrocious, sure, but the first book wasn't the worst crap I've ever read.

What I suspect most of us hate about Twilight isn't the book itself, but the legion of rabid, terrifying fangirls. The ones debating on online forums about Team Edward vs. Team Jacob. The ones who will argue that Twilight is the best book ever written. The ones who camp out at Twilight movie premieres 1 month before opening day. The ones who post YouTube videos of themselves sobbing their heart out when Rpattz and Kstew broke up irl.

I hate the fans. I desperately hate the rabid fangirlzzz. There aren't enough words to describe my loathing of Twitards. The book itself wasn't that bad.

I've read far worse before. I will read far worse in the future. I've read books that I wish were paper so that I could fling it across the room during a fit of rage.

I've read books with alpha-douches who have made me use curse words that have made a Navy sailor blush. I've read books where the love interest is as abusive asshole who would think nothing of commenting on his love interest's tits or weight. And these books aren't even new adult.

I've read books where the main character is a rampant fellow-girl hater and slut shamer. I've read books where the main character is so fucking dumb it makes my teeth hurts. I've read books where the main character seems to be doing her damnedest to remove herself from the human gene pool and it is only by the grace of deus ex fucking machina that she is saved.

I've read books whose plot makes Game of Thrones seem simple, and not in the "Wow, that's really complex" kind of way as it is "What the actual fuck were you smoking when you wrote this?" kind of way.

So in that sense, Twilight is really not that bad. Sure, Bella is dumb and a Mary Sue, but the worst you can say about her is that she is completely colorless and bland, with the personality of a block of tofu. The worst you can say about Edward is that he's a weirdo stalker who likes really young girls despite his age, but man, watching a girl while she sleeps? He's been out-creeped by far worse men.

So really. I mean it. You may hate Twilight with my blessing, but please don't believe it's the worst example of YA literature out there. Is isn't, by any stretch of the imagination.

Soumi Three stars?

Diamond Me too. I wanna reread it after reading all the crap lately. I like this series and I'm pretty stubborn about it, as horrible as it is in some aspects, it's like a guilty pleasure. Haha, or it was when I read it last

message 4: by Jo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jo ★The Book Sloth★ I've been thinking of re-reading this for a while. But I'm afraid it's gonna be a complete disaster and I have too good memories from the time this was the "shit".

Nicole (book.quill) You've read quite a few doozies as of late... So it might be slightly more glittery doozie

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies It really can't be worse than anything I've read lately.

Diamond Khanh (Kittens, Rainbows, and Sunshine) wrote: "It really can't be worse than anything I've read lately."

Exactly. I agree.

pdbkwm You know, I went into this thinking it was going to be this horrible book that would have me screaming, but it wasn't that bad. It's definitely not as bad as some of the books out there. Not even close.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies It's the rabid fangirls that made me hate it so much, and not the book itself.

Nicole (book.quill) If you take it for what it is, a love story written about a vampire boy and human girl with a target audience of young girls... Then it's not the worst book with that premise. Not even close.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies Nope, not at all. It's wish fulfillment at worst.

message 12: by FLEX (new)

FLEX reads It has been awhile since I've read or should I say abandoned it half way through. I MIGHT reread it. But I did LOATH it the first time so who knows.

Eric Plume I got through all four books (I was a security guard and my co-worker got them as presents, shit happens). My take; the series needs yellow covers and a title change... "Abusive Relationships For Dummies, vol. 1-4" ought to work great.

Mizuki it surprises me to see you having yet to read it.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies I have. But that was like...8 years ago.

Mizuki OK.

Jessica I will pray for you.

message 18: by O.R. (new) - rated it 1 star

O.R. I actually read it before I knew what good books are made of and STILL did not like it, lol

Rivkasilver I'm far from Twilight's biggest fan, but I gotta say that the many, many haters of this book really have to get over themselves.
Twilight is not the worst piece of literature to ever cross my path. Seriously? It's funny (if not intentionally so) and romantic and decently written. So maybe it's true and Haters gonna hate, but I'm glad you're going to give this book a second chance.

Diamond Khanh (Kittens, Rainbows, and Sunshine) wrote: "Nope, not at all. It's wish fulfillment at worst."

Once again, you've said it best Homegirl.

It is not the worst so far for me either, that would be Cassandra Clare's books (seriously CoB already made Twilight look good, Meyer at least wrote her own stuff), but it isn't good either.
And lets face it we all know that a big deal in the movies' success was stuff like this:

Which is at least something that comes out of it that can be called positive for girls and some women, it gave many what they wanted.
Usually they would have to listen to K-Pop to get that sort of man-whoring. I guess if they had this in it:

or this

The movies would have sold much better.

Also at least this stuff brought as things like this:

and of course the classic:

source:

Now don't get me wrong, all this was rather a side effect and nothing Meyer intended. So at least it shows that our society is not as bad for having Twilight exist and be successfull.
Now Cassandra Clare's books on the other hand....

booksofthedead I know everyone loves to hate on this, but I remember my reading experience being really enjoyable. I'm not sure how it would go if I read it now, but when I was fifteen, this book was fun. My copy is permanently missing, though. I lent it out to basically the entirety of my sophomore class and never quite got it back, lol.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies I didn't really think about it at the time. The most offensive thing about it was Edward was weird and Bella was boring.

booksofthedead I didn't think about it at all, which is one of the reasons I don't want to go back and re-read it because I might ruin the memory. xD I remember thinking Bella was vapid, Edward was creepy and that Jasper was where it's at.

O.R. I couldn't stand Bella repeating every page how gorgeous Edward was, detailed description every 5 pages made me hate this book [esp since not much was happening apart from that]

O.R. Oh boy, I did not know how bad it can get, trust me

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I didn't like how Bella kept saying how beautiful Edward is too.

Ever seen the graphic novel?

message 30: by M. (new) - rated it 5 stars

M. Lewis It's funny because with all the negativity about the books I actually loved them. :-) For some reason they really made me FEEL.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies No judgment here. You like what you like :)

message 32: by Brigid (new)

Brigid Yeah, you're kinda right about that Khanh. I thought the majority of Armentrouts and erotic romances were worse than Twilight. I'll join the club.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies The thing about Armentrout is that she's so entertaining despite the terribleness.

Lib (Enthusiastic reader, occasional reviewer) I agree with you I Eat Crayons - I put off reading them for aaages because of all the hype and groaned everytime they were mentioned, but when I actually read them, I really loved them. =)

kat (wanderfulbooks) WOW! I enjoyed reading this review. So much!

Kristin I completely agree. There is much, much worse out there. I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head with the Twitards (I can't tell you how much I love that teehee).

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

I read a pages in my school's library and thought, "Wow, this is actually written better than some books--it's rip-offs as of late."

I still hate it since it spawned that shiterature called "50 Shades of Grey" Oops, I meant "Master of the Universe."

message 38: by Eric (last edited Sep 22, 2014 07:32PM) (new)

Eric Plume As always I find myself unable to disagree with you, Khanh. I read Twilight and found it to be deserving of neither hate nor love. Really, it's just...kinda average.

One wonders why it became a cultural phenomenon.

Carolyn I agree. I actually kind of liked it in a mindless, escape-read sort of way. It's not going to win any Pulitzers, but as you said, there is far worse out there. (And the sequels were pretty bad.)

Stephanie I read this before the fandom took over and thought the first book was a lot of fun. the subsequent books, not so much,

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies Renesmee, my sister tells me, is way worse than Bella ever was.

Marianne (Boricuan Bookworms) Totally agree with you, Khan! While not the best book out there, Twilight definitely introduced me to the world of vampires. Thanks to this I could discover better, sexier, non-sparkly vampires in other books ;)

message 43: by Lib (Enthusiastic reader, occasional reviewer) (last edited Sep 22, 2014 08:02PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lib (Enthusiastic reader, occasional reviewer) I really liked the other books in the series, but I immensely disliked the entire pregnancy in Eclipse.. that was just... ick! And Renesmee... RENESMEE??!!? Geez.. should've just called her Beezleboob and been done with it!

Meliss I agree with you as well. The Twi-hards kind of ruined this book for everyone. That's why it's seen as such a joke now. I even read a blog post by Stephenie Meyer where she said that Twilight "isn't the wholly positive place" for her anymore because of all the backlash. But the book itself isn't actually that bad if you read it without the opinions of others in your brain.

Not as bad as many others, but I think it would be fair to say that Meyer just had a lot of luck when she published it, in and off itself it probably would have never become a hit.

I was in High School when this book came out, and I honestly don't remember YA being all that popular before it. After that book came out there was a huge boom of teens who didn't like reading, suddenly loving books.

message 48: by Willow (last edited Sep 22, 2014 10:15PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Willow I agree, Twilight isn't that bad. I gave three stars too. Yes I rolled my eyes. Yes, it's hokey, but it was well-paced. I whipped right through it. I always think the worse thing a book can be is boring.

Imani to me, Hollywood ruined this series. fangirls became rabid once there was a cast. Suddenly E! reporters were fans of something they new nothing about before they had to cover it. and though there was squealing on my part during the first movies (excuse me, I WAS a hi skooler then after all) now it was on TV on FX this afternoon for example and my reaction is "ohgawd no." *flips channel*

message 50: by Eira (new)

Eira Langdon Not a Twilight fan but I will say that it got a lot of younger girls reading who then go onto reading better books. What do you think is the worse YA book out there?
