Avoid if you loathe allegory and an overload of symbolism.

P. He can be so tedious!!! I've been unable to get thru his early works [eg Winter of our discontent] but found East of Eden [his last I think - except for Travels with Charley?] good. I'm 'going in' for a reread [I think I read it once years ago or maybe I just imagine I did] of Grapes of Wrath and am expecting a good deal of tedious philosophizing and endless politicking, so don't know if I'll finish. I am very fond of his Tortilla Flat etc [which he wrote as wartime comedy] When he chose, he did have a way with words and character.
