“But with you Len, when I met you…I sort of feel like I met myself.
4.5 stars!
This book was so good! This was a heartwarming and beautiful romance about grief, finding yourself again, family, and love. Promise me Sunshine follows Lenny, a babysitter whose best friend died and she's on a journey to live again. Lenny meets Miles, who also knows about grief and is able to help her with her grief list. Will they fall in love or just stay friends?
"Every time I fall in love with you there's lightning...There's only you. Lenny. Every time..it's just you" he says muffled as he kisses me. "And you." He kisses me again. "And you."
Lenny
I love Lenny so much, she's quirky, funny, chaotic, caring, loyal and protective. I related to Lenny because I have faced the loss of loved ones (three of my grandparents passed away) and grief is a long process and is very difficult at times. I'm very inspired by Lenny and how she was able to feel great again after her best friend died. Lenny's character development was amazing, I enjoyed watching her find herself and find a path through her grief.
"Grief is a relationship. It's the way we figure out how to keep loving them even though they're gone. And in order to do that we have to keep on going. And going and going. You're not bretaying her by healing, you are honoring her..."
Miles
I'm in love with Miles, he's loyal, sweet, caring, brave, dependable, (wears glasses...yes please) and will do anything for the people he cares about. He was gruff at first but once you saw past his exterior you realize that he has a heart of gold and is a sweetheart. I was swooning and blushing at the sweet things he did for Lenny. I loved that he was able to help Lenny through her grief and give her advice to feel alive again. He showed that everyone deals with loss in different ways. I wish he was real, he's such an amazing person.
Romance
The chemistry and tension between Lenny and Miles was awesome. I enjoyed that the romance developed over time and was strengthened over time. I did feel that Lenny's feelings for Miles were a bit abrupt, at one point she was just friends with him and then suddenly she was in love with him, there wasn't development of her feelings for him. I also felt that something was missing from the romance, a bit of a spark that wasn't quite there. I loved that Lenny and Miles understood each other and helped each other through their loss.
Story
I was engaged in the plot throughout the book and the pacing was perfect. I appreciated that the author highlight grief in a light way but also showed that grief is a continuous process and some days you will feel happy and other days will be hard. The writing was engaging and poetic, I loved how relatable the author made the characters. I enjoyed the ending, but I felt that one aspect of the story wasn't completely resolved. I also was hoping for an epilogue which would show the characters live several years in the future.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, awesome characters, and important themes such as grief and finding yourself.
