FULL REVIEW
I managed to finish this just in time for count it "as read" in 2007! With (how appropriate) 7 minutes to spare lol:>
I really enjoyed this book!!:D I was amazed at how vibrant the characters were and how attached to them I felt. Had I known the plot going into the book, I think I would have been very hesitant as the story centers around an attack from Cluny the Scourge (an evil rat) and his horde on the peaceful and caring Abby of Redwall mice and other woodland creatures - for 350 pages. Now, that said, for whatever reason the story did not drag or seem like it was being spread out too much! Wonderful!!:) Jacques manages to weave in delightful characters (or not-so-delightful, but that's the point) and several sub-plots that are really just as important as the main plot. And even though I had a strong inkling of what the ending would be, I never felt too confident in my assumptions and was surprised by how events came about to get to the end.
I mentioned this would possibly be a good story for LOTR fans, because of the focus on the details of battle without it feeling boring or repetitive, and also because the book is full of characters and told from various points of view but doesn't feel confused but does feel like you get to know each character.
I'm very curious to read more of the Redwall series, and am so happy to finally have read a Brian Jacques book and met Matthias and Basil and Silent Sam;)

BOOK TWO (12/15/2007)
Alright! Book II done! Things still manage to move along at a quick pace. The characters are wonderful and the plot building. Some parts have been a little sad, but the cute and warm parts have been more.:) I’m very curious to find out what the conclusion will be and how things will play out. And I’m very much looking forward to meeting the snowy owl!!!:D

BOOK ONE (12/5/2007)
I've finished the first book/part! I'm pleasantly surprised because it's nearly a third of the way through the book but it stills feels like things are in the early stages without seeming like the story is dragging. I wonder if this is because the story is - in a way - doubled because we see it from multiple perspectives, resulting in learning what's occuring from both "the good side" and "the bad side."
I adore a new character, the "Stag-Hare!" What fun to write he must have been!:)
I'll try to write another update when I finish the second part - which, hopefully, will be sooner than another month!

I am finally venturing into the world of Brian Jacques! I know Xt speaks highly of his books, so I am looking forward to reading one myself!

X You're reading Redwall now? I hope you like it! Q and I were talking about it last night, and she reminded me about some of the violent/bloody scenes which I'd forgotten... so... I hope you don't mind them. Redwall, being the first, is quite a bit different from the later books in the series.

Ann Yes! I've finally started reading it! I've only read about two chapters (and as they are short, that's only about 5 pages...) but it isn't for a lack of finding it enjoyable (sadly, instead, a lack of time). But I do like it so far! I like the descriptions of the characters and feel that Jacques does a good job of introducing you to a character and getting you to know them right away. The mouse concept is neat, and the scenery descriptions are great!
I don't think I'll mind the violent/bloody scenes (but thanks for the warning;>).
Oh, and also I like how Jacques adds in things about characters' pasts or dreams in a way that is subtle and short but informative (if that makes sense).
Okay - more later!:)

X Yes, Jacques does great descriptions! :) I'm glad you're enjoying it so far! And also glad that you don't think you'll mind the violent/bloody scenes. I just remembered another one today that I'm pretty sure was from Redwall... But, it's not like the whole book is that way, just parts.
It's also nice that you're reading it this year as it's the 20th anniversary of the publication of Redwall! :)

Ann Really?! I didn't know it was the 20th anniversary! I actually meant to check the publication date today but forgot.
That's pretty neat then!:)

Ann I'm still enjoying! I'm about 50 pages or so into it (sadly, really, not that much) and the plot is already in what seems like full swing!:)

Qt Great! :-) I'm glad you're enjoying it and I liked reading your and X's comments on it. And you're right, it doesn't take long for the plot to get going :-)

Kathryn I'm glad you're enjoying this, Annie! This is the only one of Jaques' books I've read and that was probably about a dozen years ago now (gosh, I'm old!) so I don't remember much. Guess it didn't inspire me enough to read more of the series, but I'm curious of your views and maybe I will want to try another sometime...

message 8: by X (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:48PM) (new)

X I'm glad you're enjoying it too, especially since you're reading it on my recommendation! Thanks for the update! :)

X Thanks for your latest thoughts! I'm glad you're not finding it "dragging", and that you've found a favorite character in Basil. :)

Ann Basil is so amusing! I was also just introduced to Silent Sam - how adorable!!!

message 11: by X (new)

X Thanks for the update! I'm glad you're enjoying it! :) Yes, sad in parts, certainly. But I'm glad you're finding it has nice, happy parts too!

Kathryn Glad you are still enjoying it, Annie! Gosh, I really do not remember much about this at all. A snowy owl??? :-/ Yeah, you'll have to fill me in!

message 13: by X (new)

X Now I know what you did while waiting for the New Year. :) I'm so happy you liked it! :) Yes, I guess knowing the plot is about a battle between an evil horde of rats and some peaceful woodland creatures might be a turn-off making it sound like a 350-page bloody battle... but I'm glad you found that there *is* more to it than that. Are Matthias, Basil and Silent Sam your favorite characters?

message 14: by Qt (new)

Qt Wow! Glad you liked it! I liked your review too; I'm thinking I ought to reread it sometime, too, now.

message 15: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann How long has it been since you've read it? It would be a good reread book I'd think:)

message 16: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Mmm... I think those might be my overall favorites, though there's other characters that it's very difficult to rule out - such as Jess Squirel, and the Snowy Owl and Ginger Cat are quite amusing!! Constance, too - hard not to love Constance, even if she isn't especially "lovable." I did enjoy the dear Gate Keeper (I'm not going to try to type his name, because I'll just get it messed up) - but the one who helped Matthias figure out "I am that is" (very cool, BTW!) And even Warbeak was interesting in her own right. I admired the Abbott, too, but just don't think we saw as much of him as the others, so... How's that for a "favorites" list? I think though, that's why I liked the book so much, because it didn't really matter "whose story" was being told for which chapter, because there'd always be someone you like!:) Which, as you said, makes there be more to the books than "just battle."
:)

Ann Oh, *and* Cornflower and the doormouse children;>

Kathryn Yay! So glad you enjoyed it. I feel lame now for not being that into it when I read it years ago... Anyway, I really enjoyed all your reviews and comments, at least! ;->

message 19: by Qt (new)

Qt Hm...I probably read it about 1992, I would think....so, yeah, it's been a while :-)

message 20: by X (last edited Jan 02, 2008 04:00PM) (new)

X It is very good to re-read. I've lost count how many times I've read it, though it's been a while since the last time now.

message 21: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann I'm glad the book remains a favorite through several read throughs!!:D

message 22: by joe (new) - rated it 5 stars

joe i thought i'd put it in my room as an ancient relic as most of the books I read now are about 2015+ so i've never really read any 1900 books but this one is actually great :-D
