The Love We Found

So disappointed in this follow up to The Light We Lost. There was no depth to any of the characters, from her children to her friends, her ex, his wife, etc - such a contrast from the first novel. The plot was watered down, the dialogue was saccharine and unbelievable, and there was no deep dive into her relationship with Dax. I also struggled with her obsession with Gabe 10 years after he passed away, and often felt myself siding with her ex husband, the only true conflict written into this novel. The author ends The Light We Lost in such an unfinished, not-happy-ending way that following up with this novel seems a travesty to the first.
Also, I felt the handling of Dax's loss was so poorly done - it was in no way comparable to Lucy's (Dax's was legitimately far, far worse in comparison) and the scene where his ex wife shows up to the apartment and he basically sends her away made me so deeply, incredibly sad. There are times in novels where you can read an author's inexperience with a subject, and Jill Santopolo is neither divorced nor has children of any of these ages, and it was blazingly obvious.

"I was onboard for the first novel, loved the narrative, bought that she couldn't get over Gabe, but this novel is now 10 years later and any reasonable adult can see that she needs extensive therapy to handle this obsession that has literally upturned her whole life. This is supposed to be a lighthearted read, but the subject matter is undeniably serious."
