really liked it

This is another book (series of books) I was introduced to by my late wife (we were married 34 years before she passed so there were quite a few books we ended up sharing, sometimes to the surprise of each of us. I introduced her to things like epic fantasy she "introed" me to things like, well Preston/Child or Koontz). I am surprised not only that I liked it (them) but that I decided to give it 4 stars.

This is a surprisingly absorbing read and the Pendergast character while he could have ended up a caricature works very well. You come to know him and like him (even if it would be a lot like being friends with Superman).

This book can be enjoyed on several different levels and you can think about it or not pretty much as the mood hits you.

So, no spoilers, a threat from the jungle invades the museum.... It turns out to be more than what we might first think of as a threat from the "natural world", at least the "natural world" we're familiar with. This is a bit of a genre bending title and comes closest to a cross between horror and urban fantasy. I suppose the closest comparison I might make would be with the repairman Jack books. Of course, Jack is a somewhat more believable "human" than Pendergast who seems to be a master of all disciplines eastern and western and tough enough to make the incredible Hulk pale (green) if he happened to know what he was up against in the tall painfully thin Special Agent in unrelieved black.

Lots of fun, lots of action, pure brain candy.

Pretty good book. Enjoy.

Mike (the Paladin) My attention was drawn to this review I did a while back...and I found 2 spelling errors (blushes). I hope they were typos.

🥀 Rose 🥀 Kudos to your wife. This is an excellent series. This is the first collaberation of Preston/Child. As the series moves forward, they get better and better. The character, Pendergast, it one of my all-time favorite. I hope you will venture further into these wonderful books.

Mike (the Paladin) Oh, I have. I think I'm current on them...but there may be one I still have to read. My wife passed last year but she loved these books and I got them for her from the library several times in audio (and would then listen to them myself). I even own a couple in audio and most of them (if not all) in print. I had bought the audios for my wife as Christmas presents etc.

I agree on the whole I like Pendergast. I tend to dress in dark colors and a lot of black (I was once told that black was slimming, but it's not true ... I've been wearing black for years and I'm not a bit slimmer.:). Anyway, Pendergast has a line in Still Life With Crows I love. A young woman who's a "goth type" asks him why he wears black all the time, is he an "undertaker" or something? He replies "no, like you I am partial to the color". I can hear that in his New Orleans drawl.

🥀 Rose 🥀 Haha! Just tell folks you like Johnny Cash. My son likes to wear black as well. He's not goth, he's just "partial to the color". Still Life was one of my favorites. The gal you are referring to was Corey Swanson. I remember her because I have known a gal since I was 5 with the exact same name. Douglas Preston was surprised to hear this since they research extensively names so they don't use someone's actual name. Just a little trivia there.

Mike (the Paladin) Typos! I keep finding typos. If you type something you can read over it a dozen times and see what you meant to put there instead of what is there...then after a while, it jumps out at you.

Sheesh.

Danny I read the Cabinet of Curiousities which was my first foray into Pendergast, was quite an enjoyable read.

Mike (the Paladin) Yes I agree, The Cabinet of Curiosities is where Preston/Child hit their stride with Pendergast.

Ruby Tombstone Lives! Nice review, Mike. I don't love mystery or detective novels, but your review has sold it for me. Thanks!

Mike (the Paladin) If you think about following the "Pendergast" novels the one after this, Reliquary is fairly weak, but the third,The Cabinet of Curiosities is probably better than this one.

Rhonda thank you, you have opened another gentre for me; I am up to Pendergast #6 Great Reads!

Mike (the Paladin) I know. They kind of walk the line at times but I've enjoyed them.

Linda Sanchez Haha...like good brain candy comment....I enjoyed it a lot after I got through the first few chapters.

Elisabeth I read Cabinet of Curiosities first and am now going back to the beginning. :)

Mike (the Paladin) The Cabinet of Curiosities was one of the best of the series in my opinion.

Mike (the Paladin) Over our marriage (we were married 34 years when she passed) we occasionally discovered books we both liked. She leaned more toward horror and mystery where I like fantasy genres (epic, UF etc) more but now and then a book would appeal to both of us. The Pendergast books were among them.

Hope you and your husband continue to find books you can both like.

LOL

Mike (the Paladin) We had our ups and downs like all couples. She had a series of strokes and as I said passed. It was Aug.1, 2009. Our 34th anniversary would have been the 22nd.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* I have the first five in this series to read. Just bumped it way up to read this one next after I'm done with another thriller I'm reading. Looking forward to it. I remember seeing Relic and enjoying it, although someone told me it's a lot different from the book.

Mike (the Paladin) It is. As noted my wife loved these. Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities are my favorites...of course they're still writing.
