it was amazing

Well, I did it. I judged a book by its cover and I was soooo off base as to what I thought this story was going to be about! I mean, there’s hot abs on the cover, which led me to believe it would be a fluffy story about love at first sight. It was, but it wasn’t. But I was glued to it, folks. I couldn’t walk away until I had it finished.
This is the story of Honor. She’s a romance writer, and while out for a run one morning she is attacked, abducted and thrown into a hole in the middle of the woods. She manages to snatch her abductor’s cell phone and tries calling for help. That fails, but then she receives a text on the phone and asks for help in reply. It just so happens that the man texting is Nathan. A marine who unknowingly is playing poker with the man who, it turns out, is a sicko who abducts and rapes women. He finds Honor and saves her from the woods, but that plunges them into a dangerous cat and mouse game with the abductor, who is hell-bent on revenge.
This book really blew me away. It was exciting, sexy and just a good read. This is the part of my review where I would normally criticize the insta-love aspect of the story, because the characters have an instant attraction to one another and even though they have just been through a terrifying experience, still manage to flirt with one another. But I can’t fault the author for that, because in this story it actually works. The way the writer has written this, from the perspective of a romance novelist, she addresses the absurdity of it in Honor’s inner monologue, so I have to give her a pass. It’s genius, seriously.
I really liked the characters in this story as well. Honor has some serious fight in her. She’s small, but she’s a firecracker. She never, even in dire circumstances, gives up hope. She keeps fighting. And Nathan, a war vet with inner wounds of his own, manages to be both alpha and sensitive; endearing yet tough. I’ve said before that I think that’s a tough line to toe when writing an alpha character, but Cambria really hits the nail on the head with Nathan. He’s a great guy, and he and Honor are perfect for one another. And even though there’s insta-love, she still manages to create romantic and sexual tension between the characters. That’s an absolute feat, as that’s my main complaint with insta-love is that there’s no build up! This has build-up! It’s awesome!
I found this book utterly captivating. It’s unlike any book I have read in recent memory, and I was totally surprised by it. If you haven’t picked this up yet, do it! You will love every minute of it! 4.5 stars!
