it was amazing

What a great story!
This is quite the page-turner! I was driven to read more by both the action/adventure and the plot/conclusion. Both are excellently written! Funke鈥檚 style of writing (and indeed the translation made by Anthea Bell) makes for a smooth and beautiful read.
Wonderfully drawn and very detailed characters fill this book from cover to cover, each character being unique and complete. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, which adds another interesting dimension to the story and plot.
The book doesn鈥檛 contain many light-hearted chapters (as you would find in Harry Potter or Narnia) but the wonderful lead characters are such good people that the book is far from dark.
The whole idea of the story is beautiful and intriguing! And the quotes that begin each chapter are perfectly chosen.
I kept wondering if there were areas that Funke could have taken out to make the book shorter 鈥 but I couldn鈥檛 really find anything that wouldn鈥檛 mar the story in some way, and I was grateful there were as many pages to read as there were!
A wonderful read and an interesting story that I think has become a new favorite!

I've read through chapter 16 now, and things have begun to be explained. The book is so very dear, and so very addicting! I now am not at all concerned with finishing it by the movie's release date!:D
***
I plan to begin this book today. I've got so many others that I'm in the midst of reading right now, but the fact that I want to finish this before the movie comes out (eek!) I'd best hurry up and start it!!
***
Oh dear!! I'd totally blanked and forgotten that this was being made into a movie!! I saw in the paper today that it's being released in mid-March. While this is wonderful, it means that I'd better hurry up and read it!!!

Cornelia Funke
“Books have to be heavy because the whole world's inside them.”
Cornelia Funke, Inkheart

Cornelia Funke
“If you take a book with you on a journey," Mo had said when he put the first one in her box, "an odd thing happens: The book begins collecting your memories. And forever after you have only to open that book to be back where you first read it. It will all come into your mind with the very first words: the sights you saw in that place, what it smelled like, the ice cream you ate while you were reading it... yes, books are like flypaper鈥攎emories cling to the printed page better than anything else.”

Kathryn Yes, it's a long-ish book, so be sure to allow some time! But, it moves fairly quickly and is such an enjoyable read you won't want it to end! I'm glad the movie is coming out sooner than summer! Something to look forward to for spring break!

Qt Mid March?! Wow, that's great that it's so soon :-D

Kathryn Yay! I'm glad you're going to start this, Annie. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to discussing it with you! :-D

message 4: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Oh yeah! Discussions should be fun!!:D I'm looking at it now... I don't know how I'm going to finish it in 5 weeks, but... here's to trying!

Kathryn Well, not like we have to see the movie the day it coems out or anything. We can wait a few weeks. Plus, who knows if it will even get good reviews; but here's hoping...!

message 6: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann So far I'm three chapters in. Upon reflection, I realized that the story really starts right off - from about page two or so! Already hooked, interested, and trying to figure things out from the moment Dustfinger arrives!
Oh, and whatever that little creature is, sounds (I must admit) quite adorable!

Kathryn Yay! Glad you are enjoying it so much already
:-> (And, yes, Dustfinger's furry friend is so cute!)

Kathryn Hooray! I'm glad you liked it so much, Annie! :-> I'll look forward to reading the next one with you.

Ann Yes, I think it will make a good book to read together! There should be a lot that we can "theory" about together;)

message 10: by Qt (new) - rated it 5 stars

Qt Great review, and I'm glad you liked it! I too loved the quotes that started the chapters (and am thinking of reading some of the books quoted) and hope you like the second book too :-)

message 11: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Hey, that's a great idea! To read the books that were quoted! I've read Peter Pan and LOTR and Treasure Island, but I think that's it of the ones she quoted. I wondered about some of the books I'd never even heard of - like the ones that had been translated. I wonder if those would be interesting... Let me know if you find any to read!
Katie and I just watched "Jane Austen Book Club" and in it the one member of the book club actually reads a book that one of Austen's characters reads!:)

Qt That is neat!!

message 13: by X (new) - rated it 4 stars

X I think I'm going to have to read this sometime too, now. Great review!

message 14: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann I think you would like it, X. I mean, I can't say for sure, but I think you'd like the style of it.

message 15: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Lol! Well, it's a loooong book so you'll be all set:)
I'm very curious to see the movie, because it looks like they taken some liberties but I think that overall it looks (from the trailers anyway) like they've kept with the main themes (phew!).

I'm having a harder time getting into "Inkspell" but I think I'm just daunted by the size. Once I started reading "Inkheart" I thought it read really quickly, so... Hope you and your husband enjoy it! I think you will.

message 16: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Wow and wow!
Wow because I didn't know it took so many cds for the book - but I guess that makes sense based on how many hours of music can be downloaded on a cd...
and Wow that it's Lynn Regraves! Now I think about it I bet she would be wonderful as the narrator!! I've never listened to a book on tape but I keep hearing how great they are, so I think I may have to do that sometime.
Glad you and your husband are enjoying "Inkheart" so far - I found it a very addicting book :)

Ann Yay! Thanks, Ella. I hope you like it :)

Janeen-san I LOVE YOUR REVIEW IT'S FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! I love the book Inkheart, and Inkspell too! THERE IS A THIRD ONE COMING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 20: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Wow, THANKS Janeen-san!!
I've been trying (about three times now) to get into Inkspell but keep getting stuck at chapter 4... I think it's just there's so many characters to start their plots that it's like reading four "first chapters" instead of one... It sounds like it must get more involved though if you liked it so much. I assume you'd suggest sticking with the second book?

message 21: by Janeen-san (last edited Jun 30, 2009 11:16AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janeen-san Well, I found book two to be very confusing at some points because the author kept on skipping around with the view points so much...But I loved it, It was great.
I got Inkheart for my birthday and I'm going to re-read it! You should definatly listen to Inkheart on CD or audio tape when you get the chance, Lynn Redgraves is AMAZING.
Inkspell is very good, however I had to re-read a few chapters. It was very exciting and suspensful!!
I hope you get to read it soon, please tell me what you thought of it!

message 22: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Thanks!!:D I appreciate your comments. That makes me feel better about Inkspell. I have a hard time getting into it, and I think it's because the first three or four chapters are each from a different perspective. Which, kind of neat, but also it's like starting four books at once and is hard to build up flow. So, I'm glad that you noticed that as well, but that the book overcomes it. Phew!:) I'll definitely post a review when I do read the book (or listen to it;>)

Janeen-san THe first four chapters CAN be a bit overwhelming, I know...I've read Inkspell twice, and I always need to summerize in my head: "Ok, Meggie's doing so-and-so...AT THE SAME TIME Farid is doing so-and-so..."
YES!!! DEFINATLY POST A REVIEW!!! BECAUSE YOU REVIEWS ARE REALLY AWSOME!!!!!!!

Lisa Vegan I'm going to have to bump this up. Thanks for mentioning it in the Comfort Reads group!

message 25: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Oh, cool! I'm glad mentioning this in the CR chat brought it to someone's attention :)

I think you'd like it. It's a pretty thick book, but I remember reading through it quickly. :)

message 26: by Lisa (new) - added it

Lisa Vegan People are really all over the place about this one, but I adore the premise and I think I'm going to be one of the readers who enjoys it. Perhaps this autumn...

message 27: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann Yes, it does really receive mixed reviews. I think a lot of the negative reviews stems from the extensive length. I was very daunted, but for whatever reason I found it a very quick read. I don't know why, it's not like something happened on every page, but I guess I was just one of those who fell into the "love it" category.

Shoe-mena LOVE it!

message 29: by Nourah (new) - added it

Nourah Alflayyeh I agree I couldn't stop flipping the pages to find out what happened next!
